North Korea scraps South Korea military safeguard pact

27 May 2010 8:27 UK

Bilateral tensions have been mounting since the Cheonan sinking North Korea has announced it will scrap an agreement aimed at preventing accidental armed clashes with South Korea, amid rising tensions over the sinking of a South Korean warship.

The move is in retaliation for Seoul blaming Pyongyang for a torpedo attack that sank the Cheonan in March.

The announcement comes as the South Korean navy conducts a major anti-submarine drill.

An international probe found the Cheonan was sunk by a Northern torpedo.

North Korea has denied the allegation.

In a statement on the North Korean official news agency on Thursday, the North Korean military also warned that if South Korean vessels crossed the disputed maritime border between the two countries, it would launch an immediate attack.

The BBC's John Sudworth in Seoul says the announcement is another piece in the picture that is coming out of North Korea of increasing tension.

6. Once again, n korea wants something.
they have been scraping for years to be recognized.

But because their ham handed attempts are constantly rebuffed, they try the next best thing, violence.

They are the stumbling angry drunk at the party that everyone wish would leave.

One day, they are going to piss off the wrong person.

11. The problem is worse if they lose the war
S Korea would win the war.

But what do you then do with the North Koreans. They have been living in a torture cell for two generations. They are inches shorter then the South Koreans. Certainly less well educated. Most North Koreans would have to be on welfare the rest of their lives.

How well would the US do if we had to move everybody from the Congo to the US?

Terrible question.

8. Quite often
The worse things get internally for a country the solution is to externalize their focus, find an enemy to blame and actually start hostilities in order to turn the peoples minds away from their personal problems.

10. So true...
... and it can work both ways.

S.Korea has an election coming up June 2nd. A lot of S.Koreans have been unhappy with president Lee and the anniversary of former president Roh's death was just a few days ago.

I still don't understand what the definitive proof was to make them think it was a N.Korean torpedo that hit the ship. The blue marker inscribed "number 1" in Korean? That's like saying one can tell whether a handwritten "1 A" was done by a Canadian or an American.
