GOP tries to upend NC campaign backed by tea party
Edited on Mon May-24-10 05:59 PM by unc70
Source: WRAL / AP

RALEIGH, N.C. - Republican officials are taking the rare step of trying to derail the campaign of one of their own candidates - a risky move for party leaders trying to harness the power of the tea party movement while not letting it grow beyond their control.Tim D'Annunzio, a congressional candidate in North Carolina's most competitive district, has run an anti-establishment campaign with vows to dismantle entire branches of federal government. His ideas have drawn support from tea party activists, and he has raised more money from individuals than his GOP rival while also contributing more than $1 million to his own campaign....In Hoke County divorce records, D'Annunzio's wife said in 1995 that he had claimed to be theMessiah, had traveled to New Jersey to raise his stepfather from the dead, believed God would drop a 1,000-mile high pyramid as the New Jerusalem on Greenland and found the Ark of the Covenant in Arizona. A doctor's evaluation the following month said D'Annunzio used marijuana almost daily, had been living with another woman for several months, had once been in drugtreatment for heroin dependence and was jailed a couple of times as a teenager....D'Annunzio was the leader in a Republican primary vote earlier this month but didn't get enough votes to avoid a runoff. He faces former television sportscaster Harold Johnson in a runoff vote June 22 for the 8th District, which extends from Charlotte to Fayetteville. The GOP is targeting Democratic Rep. Larry Kissell, who won the seat two years ago after many years of Republican control.

1. Seems like the perfect GOP candidate. When can we expect Palin to thrown a rally for him?

17. Only for Undeclared/Independent voters
Edited on Mon May-24-10 06:27 PM by unc70
They can chose which primary they vote at the time of the primary. Since this is a runoff, a voter who participated in the Dem primary would not be allowed to vote in the Repub runoff (same for those who voted Repub voting in the Dem runoff).

Don't see many Dems trying to cross over to screw with the Repubs in this one. Better to let the Repubs fight this one out among themselves.

Most of the Dems and progressive independents are very interested in the Dem runoff for US Senate candidate to challenge Burr in the fall. That race is between SoS Elaine Marshall and Cal Cunningham. I personally prefer Elaine and believe she is the more-progressive candidate and also would have a better chance in the gneral election. (She once beat Richard Petty in a state-wide election.) Cal has considerable backing by the DNC, DSCC parts of the party. Supporters for each of them here at DU.

Many supporters for Larry Kissell here at DU. They worked hard to win that district from the Repubs two years ago.

9.  if the writer knew the function of the space bar.
I think it's a cut & paste problem.... the words without spaces between them being the end and beginning of the lines as originally posted.

The info good though!

Ahhhhh....NC.... If he does get on the ticket, he can't win.

13. Oh, I wasn't slamming the OP...
hope it doesn't look that way- I was slamming the author of the article. I miss the days when you got the news from the papers, which were also edited for errors. They don't seem to have as much editorial oversight on the internet.

I am working from a somewhat strange environment because of security, but I usually don't have this problem. Something funny with the select/paste

I will keep trying. Unfortunately, too late for further edits, so I alerted on myself to see if the mods can fix it. Suspect some problem with CR/LF vs LF/CR or something similar.

19. I understand. Problem may be in LBN posting widget
It is the only place where a new post has all the extra sections, rather than just a single window to post in. There is apparently something different in its action handler.

Thanks for the K&R.

10. It serves the Republicans right. What type of people did they think
they'd attract, sending them around to rallies on fancy busses, stirring up the fear and hate? The Teabaggers just keep getting more whack. I love it.

20. The funny thing is that is rather predictable

The Republican Party has this kind of infighting when it doesn't have a clear head of the party to insist on harmony.

When Bush chose Cheney he guaranteed that there would be a nasty primary fight and that the factions would harden.

Then McCain compounded the sin by appointing Palin ensuring another 8 years of ambiguity and infighting.

Both Bush and McCain hated studying history. If they simply had stuided Republican Party history then they would have known that the campers need their little leader to keep the bat shit crazy down.

Thanks George, thanks John!

11. The teabaggers are a gift from God.
This could still be a really crappy year for Democrats--and deservedly so, to a degree--but the more Libertarian nutjobs the Republicans nominate the better our chances get. Who knows--we might even pick up a seat or two.

18. NC Republicans are quite....stern with them that are uppity
They've aired Patrick McHenry's dirty laundry to WRAL and other outlets. And tried to shut him out various functions and information within the Party.

Unfortunately it's just the good old boys trying to oust the upstarts rather than anything useful to constituents.

And he is a great guy to talk to and have a conversation. The "Big Guy" as he is called and one of the only reasons to watch Ch. 9 Eyewitness News (If it bleeds, it leads, and all crime, all the time station).

24. What the guy’s ex said during the divorce
“In Hoke County divorce records, D'Annunzio's wife said”

Lol With all the craziness on this guy, you would think the reporter would not have to resort to using what the guy’s ex said during the divorce.

This guy seems like a dream come true for the Democratic candidate. I know I would love to run against an opponent like him.

:P
