Rand Paul: Obama BP criticism 'un-American'
Source: MSNBC.com

WASHINGTON - Kentucky Republican Senate candidate Rand Paul said Friday that President Barack Obama's criticism of BP in the wake of the Gulf oil debacle sounds "really un-American."

Paul, already facing a backlash over remarks earlier this week about civil rights legislation, criticized the Obama administration for declaring it will put its "boot heel on the throat of BP." White House spokesman Robert Gibbs used similar language shortly after the spill.

In an interview Friday on ABC's "Good Morning America," Paul says the president's response is part of the "blame game" that's played in the United States.

Paul said that leads to the thinking that tragic incidents are "always someone's fault" and added, sometimes accidents just happen.

Which is what he is more or less saying.

After all, it's unAmerican to blame corporations for anything.

68. Massey in Kentucky also
Actually, Massey does damage everywhere it goes. Back in 2000, a Massey Energy coal slurry pond collapsed in Martin County, KY, spilling over 306 million gallons of coal sludge into 2 tributaries of the Tug River, killing off 75 miles of waterways. It was 30 times worse than the Exxon Valdez spill.

94. Coal
Edited on Fri May-21-10 01:22 PM by Mark D.
Coal companies sell power to the grid. That grid/matrix, though government run, is GE. The largest power company in the world, largest weapons manufacturer in the world, with the US as top customer for decades now. You think BP has power to influence politicians and media? GE eclipses them. That has kept coal use unabated. It's 2nd largest waste stream in America...behind sewage, coal sludge. It's also unregulated. Liners, and careful monitoring would prevent spills, but that costs money & their goal is to make money, not spend it protecting the unfortunate land, and the serfs, that also live there. The TN coal ash spill was also many times the size of the Valdez, and there are places so toxic there they are still uninhabitable. The stuff is being 'cleaned up', by being dumped into landfills in poorer sections of TN. They always pay the price for it. You won't find that dump out in the 'good' (affluent and white) areas. Coal sludge is the 2nd most radioactive material you can find out there behind depleted uranium. Yes, radioactive. Just wait 20 years, you'll hear it.

Reports of spikes in cancer and other illness rates in the poor areas they carted that shit off to bury in probably poorly designed land fills. Coal is the largest source of arsenic and mercury in the environment. Ironic the best thing you can consume for your brain power, DHA, is best found in fish. Fish are also the most mercury-laden food out there. If there is some 'NWO' trying to poison us, for profits, they are a leading part of it. The same way fluoride is industrial waste and what, waste it? They SELL that waste to localities paid for by OUR tax dollars, to poison us, as it will ravage the thyroid and pineal glands. Monsanto's Aspartame, the most toxic food ingredient of all, seen as 'healthy', for its replacement of sugar in that diet soda garbage people are wolfing down. Cancer that and pesticides & other chemical company products give us is treated with chemo, that having cancer as a very common side effect (I am not kidding). The same big chemical companies that make the chemicals that give us cancer, often involved with those chemicals used for chemo.

what amazes me is... we have the very best communications technology the world has ever seen, and not just for an elite class - brought to millions of people. And we're still just as ignorant. I fear for the continued freedom of the internet. I suspect serious challenges ahead for keeping the internet a place where you are free to voice opinion.

102. Welcome to DU!
I just saw an article on the spill that you mentioned a few days ago.

I had never heard about it until then. And they've just bought a bankrupt mine here in Pennsylvania. Now they can bring their "accidents" and environmental destruction to this state also.

Well, at least people are starting to get a taste of the true insanity that is the tea baggers.

97. Measured Words
Edited on Fri May-21-10 01:35 PM by Mark D.
This could be his undoing. His father thinks before he talks. He doesn't spout his nonsense so easily. Further, his father has problems with the presidents corporatism. He at least sees corporatism as a problem. His son, Rand, clearly does not. I debate pro-unregulated capitalists like this, all day long. They call me a socialist, for liking capitalism that was just better regulated. My thinking someone who works full time should get a living wage brings on them saying they don't earn it. Yeah, the most productive workers in the world don't earn it? Then they question poverty, a rate set too low now, as being set too high. Proof to them is that there are lots of poor people who are fat. Plus, many of them own televisions. I mention the skinny poor folks who don't have a TV, and they'll change the subject. Go after the victims. Don't go after the guy who stole that old lady's pocketbook, as he beat her to the ground. Get mad at her - for 'flaunting' her money in a pocketbook. Get mad at her walking in that part of town at that time of night. Yep. Classic. Perfect. What they do, what Rand does, is defend corporate elite trying to (successfully) run America. We the people? Nah, they the corporations.

I grew up in Kentucky before moving to Indiana (another ass-backwards GOP state, but that's another story). There are plenty of dumb asses in KY to elect this ass clown. Hell they probably think he's a great Amerrrican, and he's a Republican so he's got to be on Jeebus' side. I know plenty of people in KY including family members who won't speak to me because I have the audacity to think for myself and be a Democrat. Never underestimate the power of the combination of right wing media 24/7 and stupid, illiterate, uninformed people who vote.Especially in a Gop hell hole like Kentucky. Voting for their own best interest has never been a strong point.

It's un-American to Criticize a British corporation for destroying an American ecosystem. Say it loud. Make sure the American people know where prominent Republican candidates stand on things like this.

Corporations can drill and pollute where they like, and restaurants can pick and choose their clientele based on whatever racist bullshit comes to mind! :sarcasm:

39. He, like his fellow Republican Racists don't comprehend equality of citizenship and equal protection
According to Paul, minorities should only be tolerated and don't share in the same rights as WASPs. Those rights are reserved for God Fearing White Americans who founded this Nation on Christian principles. Being partly Native American, I suppose using his logic I could consider him to be an unwelcome alien.

66. So, does Rand's behavior pretty much confirm
everything we have suspected about Ron?

Clearly, the father is a lot smarter, smoother and more politically astute than the son. He manages to play footsie with white supremacists and still appeal to young, educated people who have libertarian tendencies ("He's anti-war! He's pro legalization!" ). And he is somehow able to push a radical, fundamentalist pro-corporate agenda and still be seen as a man of the people. It's an amazing accomplishment, actually.

The son seems to be running on the same platform as the father, as his father's political heir, even, but he just can't figure out how to play the game. Is he just saying what daddy is thinking but is too smart to say?

Other than it kind of looks like 39% is more than 44% which is weird. Maybe its just my monitor.

But it shows that BP is not an American company, its not a British company. Its a multinational company. This unhinged breed of world citizen that roams the globe for enterprise possibilities and a place to set up shop. If a place becomes inhospitable, like too much protest, or too much taxation, or environmental or labor standards, they just pick up and go to the next place where the local government assures them of lower standards and taxes than the last place. and on it goes.

Defending BP is only slightly less outrageous than the things he said on Rachel's show, but it's not a bad way to draw attention from all of that, plus it has him defending a position that libertarians can get behind without seeming like a bunch of KKKers.

I think it's a pretty clever move (in the diabolical sense). Sarah Palin has done very very well for herself precisely by spouting this kind of nonsense, having given up on trying to appeal to reality-based lifeforms, and so has Glenn Beck, and this approach could work for Paul too.

As outrageous as this kind of deluded thinking is, what I find most discouraging is that it's not just one person's crazy justification - it's just a reflection of what conservatives think. Talk about denial. What on earth will it take for any of them to "wake up and smell the oil spill?"

109. Republican Rand Paul: Don't ever criticize corporations.....
Edited on Fri May-21-10 02:32 PM by GreenTea
Especially corporations like BP that makes tens of billions dollars in profit quarterly (every 3 months) - Not gross, but tens of billions of $$$ in profit....because money is the most important thing on this planet, certainly not the planet itself... And the blind & not so blind couldn't care less how BP and other corporations are carelessly & criminally destroying big chucks of the planet all the time ....and all republicans, like Rand Paul believe money & profits are all matter in life and it’s the only thing republicans care about...Republicans & their talking heads like Fox, Limbaugh, etc...believe BP (and other corporations) should be rewarded even further ...with more gifts of deregulation by ignoring their incredibly devastating human action to our planet....Republicans just want to ignore it all, down play it & expect us to do the same. These are shameless greedy corporate republican men without decency, compassion or a soul!

Unity and what's best for the country is totally against everything republicans stand for....it's corporate profits & the corporate republican party, the rich, is all that matters to them above all else...as well as their republican racist imperialistic, military ideology.

Republican Palin is trying to be subtle, pounding it in 24/7, but there's no mistaken what she telling the republican sheep who are ALL racist as well....If your a republican you ARE a racist, NO exceptions!

125. Rand Paul is illustrating something I've said for awhile
Clearly, there are a lot of House Blue Dogs in threatened districts. Why not let them be replaced with tea partiers in November, and by Election Day 2012, America will be clamoring for some grown-ups to come back in office. At that point, we can put in real progressives, who will have a much better chance with President Obama at the top of the ticket.

Of course, we don't want them in the Senate, which does the confirmation process, but dumping the Stupaks in favor of the Pauls might just give us a fresh shot at getting the rest of the President's agenda done in his second term. It's going to take till 2012 for his economic policies, already in place, to work fully, anyway.

This on top of his "Civil Rights" comments.

Although, I don't want him to discredit the Teabagger movement TOO much. What I really want to see is the teabaggers lose GOP primaries, and then start their own party and run their own candidates so that the Conservative vote is split.

Sorta like the way the Progressive vote is split.

At least that will put both sides on equal footing.

179. Let me tell you all a story from my past misadventures as a reporter....
So, I'm sure you're all famimliar with Kinder Morgan. Well, it's a US company that was spawned from Enron (Bill Kinder and Richard Morgan.)
YEARS ago (SHit I'm old) I did an article on KM because they were taking over the British Columbian gas pipeline network. I found out all about their disgusting environmental and safety record. The article had some teeth and cause public concern, but KM was allowed to purchase the pipeline anyway (Thank god for governments that don't give a shit *rolls eyes*)

So, about three years later, if I have my dates correct, a massive oil pipeline burst in Burnaby, a suburb of Vancouver...well basically a PART of Vancouver, but the city is too divided to make a mega-city.

ANYWAY, the explosion was extremely similiar to an explosion that took place in walnut groce (May not have the name correct) California years earlier. This was not too soon after the company had been served a corrective action order from the EPA in the USA.

So, KM rolls out their slick-suited bastard PR man. He had the nerve to say his company had an impeccable safety record. I hit him with all the dirt I knew about his organization from my previous story. He stumbled and was at a loss.

Bottom line, I know that these oil SOB's will say ANYTHING to get out of a situation as soon as they possibly can. They are absolute scum and should be treated as such. DO NOT trust them. I've gone up against some pretty good grifters in my time, but the PR people at KM were the worst. I doubt BP is that much better, and their well-documented record speaks volumes.

Rand Paul: Obama BP criticism 'un-American'

Ah, Rand the company's name is British Petroleum. It is not an American company.

The original oil company "Standard Oil" spun off Sohio aka Standard Oil of Ohio in 1911 as a result of
an antitrust action. In 1968 BP bought part of Sohio in order to buy into the Alaskan oil fields. All
Sohio stations became BP later on. Same w/ Boron gas stations.

183. um ..I had to think about this, at least I TRY to think things through
AynRand Paul is an asshole.
What is 'Un-American' is letting a foreign company drill and take oil and shit on our entire Gulf Shores..how about you folks that vacation on the Redneck Riviera going down there and runnin off those foreigners ?

I like Brits in general, but their oil companies are as bad as ours. I don't like oil companies and before some schmuck starts in on me.
WTF are you doing to lessen our dependence on oil?!@ Even if the oil is coming from under our territory.

Ok ...I am not bragging here ok, just telling what we are doing to lessen our dependence on fossil fuels..

We own a start up organic homestead, veggies fruit trees etc.
We do own gasoline powered cars and tiller etc..
Our land is an old played out tobacco field..had been for over 250 yrs our soil was so bad the ONLY thing that grew here was thistles, briers and weeds.

We are chippng away at our power bill mainly since household electric is our and most everyone's biggest fossil fuel consumption.

We bought the place a bit over 3 yrs ago, we were renting before and had improved that place on our own dime. It was sold and the new landlord said well you made the place nice, so I am raising the rent(we cut the power and gas bills by over half) from 950$ to 1275$. It was a 1924 Craftsman cottage, the landlady had put some insulation in the attic new furnace and AC systems when she had lived in it and that was about all.
We stapled down mylar on top of the 12" batts in the attic.
I bought a solar attic fan that I made a frame that fit in one of the window so I could take it with when we moved.
We went from 350$ for power and 150 for gas to heat and 490$ to cool..to 200$ electric bills and 40$ gas bills. I sealed all the pipe and wire holes through the walls, put up insulated blinds. I also and opened the south side window blinds on sunny winter days.

The landlord was happy that he could show future prospective tenants the bills ....then he told me that he was going to take all that stuff I had bought and put in his house, including our wood stove which we had to leave because our backs went out on moving day. I did take my solar powered attic fan. I use it in the new house as a window fan.

The 'new' place is 2100sqft instead of 1100, now it costs less to heat. We use a 23,000 .
btu kero heater, the heat pump is 68,000 btu, we don't need all that capacity because we have added insulation of several kinds, insulated curtain liners, LED light bulbs replacing the CFLs as they die. This place takes 50 some bulbs, we replaced most of them with CFLs when we moved in, bringing about 20 with us from the rental. I had every intention of leaving them for the next tenant, though I rethought that when the new landlord started to take them as we were moving.

We use about 1200 kwhrs of power(that includes the greenhouse fluorescent lights to keep the tropicals and seedling starts for the gardens), down from 3300kwhrs when we moved in. We plan to reduce that to 500 kwrs then install solar/wind and woodgas powered generator power system. I don't know if we can bring the power down that much, we are going to try!

I have started scrounging bits to build a solar oven/furnace which I estimate should produce temps of over 400degrees. I will duct the heat from that to a solar oven/dehydrator and to under the house heating the floors.

I cook in covered pots on the stove or in the oven to save power, unless it is a dish that needs to be uncovered or uncover the last half hr to brown. I use a toaster/convection/rotisserie oven for most baking instead of the big oven. I have plug strips to kill vampire loads, coffee makers, microwave, tvs, my cell phone charges off the computer usb.
We are planning to put in induction cook top, solar well pump and water heater is here but need balance of system. Bought for half price on sale, yes it costs up front, but think of it this way..you pay for the thing up front then no oil, gas or coal is used after that.

Eventually we will get the solar water heater going..when I am well enough for long enough to build the support structure.
It has the capacity to heat domestic hot water plus enough extra to run a radiant floor heat system, at least for the bathrooms.

Our goal is fossil free or nearly so in the next ten years..that IS what we are doing to help the environment.

We also try to buy least packaging, we don't have to have the latest gadget..this puter is second hand, but the monitor is LED and uses 30, (2 on standby) watts compared to 100 for the old crt screen that got Ecycled a while back. We recycle, reuse, re-purpose.
The base box that I am going to build the solar furnace from the remains of the old top loader washer and free tempered glass I got via freecycle..the rest I still have to scrounge up.

Why should we allow oil drilling in our garden..think about it the gulf is where a lot of our food comes from.........

Being dependent on others for energy is NOT American Independence.

because the supposed un-American label was being applied to American(s?) using the "boot heel on the throat" line. Besides, I think that imagery coming from the administration is a bit over the top and not exactly one you really want to project. It just sounds dictatorial. There are much better ways to state that.
