Magnitude 6.4 Earthquake Hits Peru
Source: Washington Post

A magnitude-6.4 earthquake shook southern Peru near the Chilean border late Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. There were reports of toppled electricity poles in the Peruvian city of Tacna.

The USGS said the quake's epicenter was 25 kilometers (15 miles) west of Tacna at a depth of 11 kilometers (6.8 miles). It struck at 9:42 p.m. local time.

The were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries, said Edgard Lopez, a spokesman for Peru's Civil Defense.

But radio station RPP said the quake toppled electricity poles in Tacna and the city was without power. The station said Peru's Geophysical Institute put the quake's magnitude at 6.5.

1. That area of the world certainly seems very volatile. I'd swear I
heard two days ago that there was a quake about the same size in Chile proper. Scary.

6. There were a couple of quakes in the area >5
on the Chilean side of the border. This is the Atacama, though, and it's very sparsely populated. That's the good news. The bad news is that it's not totally unpopulated.

5. Ladies!!! Put your breasts away.
You are really shaking up the planet.

(And before anyone asks, this is a snarky reference to Islamic clerics blaming earthquakes on women wearing immodest clothing and the "boobquake" response).
