Vancouver — A 19-year-old man pleaded guilty Wednesday to manslaughter in the beating death of a gay man that shocked and galvanized Vancouver's homosexual community.
The defendant, who cannot be identified under Canadian law because he was under 18 when the crime occurred, confirmed he understood the charge in his only comments in court.
Aaron Webster, 41, died in the arms of his friend on Nov. 17, 2001 in Vancouver's Stanley Park, an area frequented by gay men seeking sex.
Police believe four attackers were involved in killing Mr. Webster by hitting him in the throat with a baseball bat or pool cue. Members of the gay community consider it a hate crime, with Mr. Webster being targeted because of his homosexuality.
