PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - A 6-year-old Pakistani schoolboy was killed and five boys and two other people wounded in an explosion on Monday outside a school in the northwestern city of Peshawar, doctors said.

Police said they were trying to determine the cause of the blast near the main gate of the school which is run by a police foundation.

"One schoolboy was killed. Seven people are wounded, five of them are children," Khizer Hayat, a doctor in a government-run hospital said. "All of the injured are in stable condition."

Islamist militants have launched a string of bomb attacks in Peshawar, which is the gateway to Afghanistan, killing scores of people over recent months.

The remote-controlled bomb blast took place outside the main gate of the state-run Police Public School at the Khyber road in Peshawar, where a large number of people were present to pick up their children, police said.
