Romney finishes first in GOP presidential straw poll

The former White House candidate beats Ron Paul by one vote at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans. Sarah Palin comes in third.

By Mark Z. Barabak
April 11, 2010

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney eked out a one-vote victory Saturday in a presidential straw poll at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans. More than 1,800 delegates chose from a list of nine prospective candidates.

Romney, who ran for president in 2008 and skipped the conference, received 439 votes. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, who also ran in 2008, finished second with 438 votes.

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin finished third with 330 votes and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was fourth with 321 votes. The rest of the field trailed far behind.

While ballyhooed -- at least by supporters of the winner -- such straw polls have usually proved meaningless. The late Sen. Alan Cranston of California, the Rev. Pat Robertson and then-Sen. Phil Gramm of Texas all won high-profile straw polls in their respective bids for president.

3. Straw polls mean NOTHING
They are fund raisers for the GOP. People show up, pay a fee and get to vote.
The mindless minions of Ron Paul are famous for mobbing such straw polls and declaring a great victory.

its not a real poll when you have to BUY a vote.

7. That would mean that elections aren't real polls either.
Money runs the realest polls these days. Or people would not be up in arms about campaign finance reform and Citizens United.

Polls that Ron Paul wins apparently mean nothing, though. So far, anyway.

5. This is the 2nd time that Ron Paul
either won or came close in a rethuglican "straw poll". http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/02/20/cpac-2010-straw-poll-resu_n_470319.html">He won the CPAC poll that they summarily dismissed as well. Seems the "establishment's" sentiments are pretty consistent and if that trend continues, the teaKKKlaners will probably ratchet it up a few notches. Although Paul espouses some of their views, he is an isolationist (anti-neocon) and a 4th amendment touter (thus pro-choice & pro-gay marriage - both in terms of opposing gov't intervention in such private matters), and that should be enough to tick off chunks of teabaggers, who don't want gov't intervention in people's lives EXCEPT for when it comes to THEIR agenda!

6. My reply to one of the number of threads about this last night:
Hang RomneyCare like a millstone around his neck and let him try to explain it away.

When push comes to shove, conservative Evangelicals will not accept a Mormon as their candidate for President and Republicans need every one of their votes they can get.

8. Yep. Go to his primary rallies in Republican Rally drag and chant "Romneycare."
If you're not sure what Republican Rally drag looks like, here's an example from the 2004 GOP convention:

Basically, anything red, white and blue that also makes you look like an over the top, nauseating asshole will serve the purpose perfectly.

You're welcome.

9. Quick: Who comes off as nuttier, Romney or Paul? BTW, might the nominee be Scott Brown?
For one important seat or another, we're going to have to fight him in two years.

I hope some Democrat somewhere is researching him very thoroughly and keeping close tabs on him.

10. The Mormon Avenger is the likely candidate
As was obvious at the R candidate debate when he got the Geo Washington backdrop.

I say "The Mormon Avenger" because they were dissed, conquered by the USA,
when the USA invaded Mexico and stole half of that country, including Mormon territory.

22. Romney care is what HRC turned out to be
If he gets the nod, Romney can claim to be the father of HRC. But I really think Ron Paul is going to be the nominee and he is going to be formidable.
