Latino Opus Dei archbishop to head Los Angeles
Source: National Catholic Reporter

The pope April 6 named Archbishop Jose Gomez of San Antonio, Texas, to take over the Los Angeles archdiocese when Cardinal Roger Mahony retires.

The appointment of the Mexican-born Gomez as coadjutor for Los Angeles puts him in line to become the highest-ranking Latino in the American Catholic hierarchy.

Gomez, 58, is the first, and currently only, full member of Opus Dei to be ordained a bishop in the United States.

At a future consistory, the pope would likely name Gomez a cardinal, given that Los Angeles is such a large and important archdiocese whose leader has traditionally worn a red hat.

Being a cardinal means that you get to elect the next Pope.

2. Actually, not more fundie catholics, just fewer catholics or
rather, more catholics without a home.

BTW - I read a good comment elsewhere -

Gomez, 58, is the first, and currently only, full member of Opus Dei to be ordained a bishop in the United States. (That we know of, and then of course there are plenty who are sympathisers or associates of this supposed 'lay' apostalate.)

14. I know that was meant as a joke, but the answer is "yes."
The first Spanish explorers who came to Central America were amazed at the number of beautiful blonde girls they found there. Albinism was common among the indigenes at the time. I think it is less so, now, with travel and intermarriage.

What a weird choice for the US. Is that in response to the abuse survivors demands for justice?

8. funny you don't see the teabaggers protesting when children are molested by the hundreds

but health care, oh yeah, there's something to get all up in your face about

9. You didn't see the teabaggers too concerned when we have been wasting money we don't have
on silly wars of choice, which are now in their 9th and 7th year respectively.

The teabagger movement at its basic core, is just a bunch of sociopaths fighting for their "supposed" right to be a sociopath. It is no coincidence that the average libertarian has trouble grasping the concept that humans have been social animals for the better part of 10 thousand years, in fact many of them haven't evolved into full mammalian behavior since they seem to be still partially stuck in the reptilian one.

11. Harsh, But Accurate
and a nice summary: Libertarian--deny basic social needs and responsibilities

Teabagger--I would say fully psychotic, not just sociopathic. They cannot connect with reality in any way, nor respond in human fashion appropriately.

10. This is exactly why things will never change in the Church.
At least not for a long, long time.

Opus Dei is another part of the problem that is the Roman Catholic Church.

12. Opus Dei Takes Catholicism Beyond the Inquisition
which was bad enough. It was the Inquisition that lost the Church its temporal power. Now they think that turning up the pressure will gain that power back. What is far more likely to happen is the complete demolition, dismemberment, disbanding and criminalization of the Church.

Instead of shedding the flaws in the Church, Opus Dei magnifies them.

Definition of Insanity applies here. But then, these are the same people as the Teabaggers and the remnants of the GOP and the 5 Dancing Supremes, and the Bush League, and so on.

By their works shall you know them.

I would have guessed this was good news - a Mexican born person reaches the highest position ever in the US branch of the Catholic church.

Why are people against this?

15. Because Opus Dei is very, very right wing.
Appointing a Latino member of the Opus Dei would be like appointing... I forgot his name-- that insane African-American birther-- to the Supreme Court. Just because somebody's African American, or Latino, doesn't mean he's liberal.

16. Here's a place to find some balanced info on Opus Dei:
http://www.americamagazine.org/content/articles/martin-opusdei.cfm

Opus Dei In the United States

By James Martin, S.J.
AMERICA for February 25, 1995
Copyright America Press 1995

OPUS DEI IS THE MOST CONTROVERSIAL group in the Catholic Church today. To its members it is nothing less than The Work of God, the inspiration of Blessed Josemaría Escrivá, who advanced the work of Christ by promoting the sanctity of everyday life. To its critics it is a powerful, even dangerous, cult-like organization that uses secrecy and manipulation to advance its agenda. At the same time, many Catholics admit knowing little about this influential group. Moreover, because of the dichotomy of views on the group, and perhaps because of its influence in Vatican circles, it is difficult to find balanced reporting on Opus Dei.

Then, there is the suggestionn that Opus Dei is infiltrating various governments, including our own:

http://www.counterpunch.org/whitney01172004.html

and many consider it to be a cult

19. Stupid
because it causes confusion. Legal, because it is stressing the "most important" element of the sentence--The pope--begins it. At least they could have used commas.

20. And there's lots of candles & incense & swishing about in robes for everyone, not just priests! Plus
Plus -- get this, women can be priests, too!

And if you need a Trinity, there's lots to choose from. Maiden, Mother, and Crone are just the beginning.

:eyes:

Maybe we should be steering them toward the Episcopalians and Lutherans first. More homey, and no snarly Pope.

Hekate

21. LIma's Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani Thorne is a member of Opus Dei
and he just defended Ratzo:

Media is rebelling against truth, says Peruvian cardinal

Lima, Peru, Apr 6, 2010 / 01:51 pm (CNA).- During Easter Sunday Mass at the Cathedral of Lima, Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani Thorne expressed solidarity with Pope Benedict XVI and noted that the media attacks against the Holy Father and the Church are “a rebellion” against truth and love.

“Personally, I object. And for this reason, in these especially difficult times, courage and the love of God must stand.”

The cardinal prayed that God might be with the Pontiff to “strengthen him” in the face of “a rebellion against the truth, against kindness, against love ... I pray that Jesus and the Virgin Mary will protect the Catholic Church and especially the Holy Father, so that this campaign to smear him will not prevail.”
