(ABC News) Poll: No more enthusiasm gap between political parties
Edited on Mon Mar-29-10 06:09 PM by brooklynite
Source: The Moderate Voice

A new Washington Post/ABC News poll indicates the “enthusiasm gap” between the GOP and Democrats has now virtually evaporated — with 76% of Dems enthusiastic about voting this November versus 75% of Republicans. Just a few weeks ago polls showed the gap with the Democrats lagging far behind.

What did it? Most likely the passage of health care reform. Liberal Democrats had become dispirited and it seemed as if we would be heading into yet one more election where a chunk of voters in one party would be losing faith with their party, stay home and in essence hand the election to the other party.

If these numbers hold up it will signal that 2010 will be an election with both parties matched in terms of enthusiasm. And — once again — the independent voter could be the final judge in the outcome (to quote San Francisco’s Mayor’s famous words “whether you like it or not..”).

Meanwhile, there are signs that the passage of health care reform could have “unstuck” Obama who now seems to be using the potential of his office’s power and imagery. Yesterday he announced 15 recess appointments, infuriating GOPers such as Sen. John McCain, who was in favor of using recess appointments when George Bush was President. Today, Obama has embarked on another tool Presidents have to gather information and also solidify their image: he arrived in Afghanistan on a trip that had been shrouded in secrecy but will get enormous media coverage.

2. The Public Option would've TOTALLY mobilized the left! And still can!
Don't know if Reid's as good as his word - but he said he would introduce the public option again sometime this year.

3. Take that, Bitch!
Althought, of course, a great deal of the election will hinge on the economy and how independents will vote. I'm betting that the bat-shit crazy wing of the Rethugs--which is most of them--will put a great deal of independents off Brand Retardican. As November nears, I predict the Teabaggers will put on their teabag dangling tinfoil hats and really amp up on wingnut steroids.
Hopefully, this will get everyone else so fed up with them, that they vote against them. We can hope.

4. with 76% of Dems enthusiastic about voting this November versus 75% of Republicans.
Edited on Mon Mar-29-10 07:30 PM by AlbertCat
And how many people identify as Repugs these days?

From about a year ago:

Post Poll: Only 20% Identify As Republicans, Lowest Since 1983

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/20/fewer-people-identify-as_n_326971.html

So that's 75% of 20% vs 76% of 80%.

If there were 100 voters, then

about 15 would vote repug. whereas over 60 would be voting Dem.

Like I'm worried :eyes:

9. Thank you. I'm no genius, y'know...
.... but for some unknown reason I remember a lot of that "crap" I learned in high school. (That's what it was for...so you won't be so gullible!)

The FACT is repugs are not a majority. Teabaggers do not speak for most Americans and neither does the GOP. This was even true in 2000 and 2004. Be sure to bring this up often!

7. Your math is a little off...
Close to 40% of registered voters have no party affiliation so its not going to be 76% of 80%. That correction made -- I am going to predict that most independent voters will be turned off by the Tea Baggers and pull the lever for the (D) side. We shall see.

10. Sorry, your math is off. It's not 20% R, 80% D. There are also independents.
The poll they cite from October, 2009 shows only 33% Dems, and 42% independent. That leaves 5% for, I don't know, space aliens or something.

Still, 76% of 33% is more than 75% of 20%, which I think is your real point, Alley. For those who are math impaired, multiplying it out: 76% x 33% = 25%, which is greater than 75% x 20% = 15%. But it's still up to those pesky independents.

11. Be wary of the angry white male
A majority of white males voted for McCain.

They are, for the most part, voting against their interest, we know.

But they are somehow angry at Obama, the man trying to help them.

We all know why and until we solve this problem by addressing it head-on, we're going to have to tread carefully with these folks.

12. 80% of people don't identify as Democrats.
It is closer to 35%. Republicans self identify at a rate of about 30% but tend to be favored by the rural district skew in the U.S. political system.

If the 1/3 of the republican base stays home, the 2010 elections could potentially be another bloodbath for them.

21. Oh, Don't You Worry.
By the time November rolls around, they'll be plenty of articles about the resurgence of the Republican party.

So, so much gullibility in this country.

27. On the other hand:
Many independents and a few intelligent rethuglicans will wake up to the fact that HCR did not end the world, did not kill grandma and, son-of-a-gun, is not so bad after all. They might, just might vote Democratic. What a fucking revelation to the tea baggers.

25. I like this place
After reading this story, I was still a bit leery, seeing the Rethugs so enthusiastically spewing their hatred. They really seem to be motivated to rally their troops to the ballot box. Seeing the opinions here is alot more reassuring.

13. If I were a Republican strategist, that's what I'd be worrying about
The louder and more unhinged they become, the more reactions they provoke among the sane- and this is true despite mediocre Democratic policies that might otherwise keep people way from the polls.

18. Voting is important. Obama should take this time to push for more
reforms. Wall street reform comes to mind. A bigger jobs bill would be nice. It would be great if he got a bill passed to counter that SCOTUS decision that gave corporations the same rights as people. That's just a start.

19. The dems showed they can get stuff done
If they show a willingness to use party discipline and procedural tactics I'm sure the numbers will go even higher. If we can cajoole the teabaggers to run as many 3rd party candidates as possible 2010 will not be such a bad year.

I'm starting to think I severly underestimated the capacity of people to be duped by the media. They tell you people aren't angry, so all of a sudden, you're not angry?

Shit, it sucks being a thinking person in America.
