Nelson (D-Ne) to vote no on (HCR) companion
Source: Omaha World Herald

By Joseph Morton

WASHINGTON - Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., announced Monday that he plans to vote against the companion health care bill that would eliminate Nebraska's Medicaid exemption, derided by critics as the "Cornhusker Kickback."

Nelson reiterated his support for the main health care bill approved in December by the Senate, which included the extra Medicaid funding and which is expected to be signed Tuesday by President Barack Obama.

Nelson touted the benefits of that bill, which will extend coverage to millions of Americans. It also will stop insurance companies from dropping people when they get sick and discriminating against those with pre-existing conditions such as diabetes.

18. Lincoln's futile attempt at walking both sides of one fence
She's opposed to the reconciliation bill, but (acknowledging it's pending approval) looking forward to how it will benefit the citizens of her state. Duplicity at its finest!

26. Maybe I need more coffee, but: Does her statement even make sense?
She's voting against it, but she's going to make sure Arkansans get the most benefit from it?

Support Halter, who is challenging Lincoln in a tough primary. http://www.actblue.com/entity/fundraisers/23963

30. She's booked 2 dates for the same night
Given the "tough" deicsion for the predicament she's in, she'll go with the Republican date. However, she'll text message her stood-up Democratic date the next day and rave about the great time she had, and at the same time proclaim that she still looks forward having an equally great time with him in the not-too-distant future. Of course, we all know what the reply back will say.

Fast forward to the primary election...

6. "A government takeover of student lending". Pretty damned desperate.
Student lending IS government lending. The question is whether banks should make fat commissions for processing the loans. I say no they shouldn't. But trying to call that a 'government takeover' is beyond the bounds of ordinary ignorance and reaching for a sublime state of unadulterated idiocy.

7. they can "reach beyond the bounds of ordinary ignorance..."
Edited on Mon Mar-22-10 07:33 PM by mike_c
...because most of the people listening to them-- their constituents-- are by definition too gullible to know what's good for them. That sounds harsh, but it's directly demonstrated by the fact they sent Ben Nelson and Blanche Lincoln to Washington to tell their lies rather than keeping them back at home to cheat customers the old fashioned way.

It's really quite shameless. Nelson et al know that they can say the most outlandish rubbish imaginable and their constituents will believe it because they're predisposed to believe rubbish. So that's what they give them, utterly without shame.

8. I'm about to become Nelson's constituent again
and will do my best to wake up Nebraskans. Not everyone there is asleep: In November 2008, Obama won a delegate (Omaha).

I also will support financially anyone who challenges Nelson in the primary, provided he has one and provided I have a job by then.

He also won a couple of other counties, one near Sioux City, and even the one that contains tiny little Wilbur! :D

31. Hey no fair - Blanche was a Democrat until Obama was elected. Then
she turns Republican, though it is funny that most of her side of Arkansas voted for Obama. She's from the Delta region, and if you look at the numbers, almost the entire Delta voted for Obama.

There is a documentary from the 60's he appears in that is worth seeing. Netflix has the DVD.

16. Cool! Thanks!!
I would never have known about that if you hadn't mentioned it. And I have Netflix, too.

I, too, am a former Nebraskan who watched Ernie carry out his job in quite a dramatic way. He was cool; he never gave up and he always generated lots of controversy and comment.

Remember that guy Roman Hruska? And who was the one who said mediocre people needed representation? I think it was in response to a comment about a SC nominee being mediocre. The thinking was laughable: like we should have a mediocre judge to represent mediocre people. That really is funny!

Nebraska never seems to have any politicians who are willing to do the right thing. They always kowtow to corporate interests. The people there are incredibly ignorant because there is no media forum that airs anything but the corporate viewpoint.

Cher

24. Nebraskans aren't ignorant; they're just very conservative
My progressive friends and I discovered DU while living there.

For the past 20 years or so, the governorship has meant a glidepath to a Senate seat. They're the ones who have been getting elected, Dems and Repubs alike. Maybe Nebraskans stick with the devils they know?

Still, even if Halter beats Lincoln in a primary, I don't see him winning a GE...Arkansas is such a shithole right now anyway.

19. As soon as he was able to scuttle a public option...
by threatening to side with the GOP in filibustering its inclusion, Joe was "on board". Presumably Joe is still quite satisfied with the damage he's inflicted, and he will be supporting the reconciliation bill.
