US kept us in the dark on torture: spy chief {Bond's "M"}
Source: Guardian (UK)

LONDON: US intelligence agencies misled allies, including Britain, about US mistreatment of suspected terrorists, the former head of MI5 has said.

Eliza Manningham-Buller, who retired as head of Britain's domestic spy agency in 2007 and is now a member of the House of Lords, said the Americans suppressed details of their harsh handling of some prisoners, including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who is accused of organising the September 11 attacks.

"The Americans were very keen that people like us did not discover what they were doing," she said on Tuesday at a lecture at the House of Lords organised by an academic group...

Baroness Manningham-Buller said she discovered Mohammed had been waterboarded only when the US Justice Department released a memo last year and it was reported in the press.

Oh.

Right.

"We Don't Torture."

I forgot that.

I wonder if "misled" is the same as "lie?"

If only MI5 were as effective in fact, as in fiction.

If only the ideals of our country were not almost all becoming fiction.

“Sometimes doing your best is not good enough. Sometimes, you must do what is required.”

1. Quotes like the one at the end of your post say something.
The concepts are

we are at war, there are things to fear, so the rights and dignity of people must be removed.

The ideas of rights and dignity of people are stopping a few people from doing what ever they want, so we must create a war.

If you sell out your values because of war, then anyone that wants to remove a countries values, will make sure it is at war all the time.

3. Ex-MI5 chief says US 'concealed suspect mistreatment'
Source: BBC News

The former head of MI5 has claimed US intelligence agencies "concealed" their mistreatment of terror suspects.

Baroness Eliza Manningham-Buller said she only discovered alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was waterboarded after retiring in 2007.

In a lecture at the House of Lords, she said the US had been "very keen to conceal from us what was happening".

Her comments follow controversy over UK agents' alleged collusion with US counterparts using torture techniques.

Last month it emerged that Binyam Mohamed, a British resident formerly held at Guantanamo Bay, had been subjected to "cruel, inhuman and degrading" treatment.

"The Americans were very keen that people like us did not discover what they were doing"

7. & how much was MI5 very keen not to "know?"
I don't find these protestations of ignorance credible. Self-serving but not credible.

11. Life is cheap
and getting cheaper. If it was wrong for the Nazi's to experiment on and torture the Jews before they exterminated them then it is still wrong to experiment on and torture 'terrorists'.
What if terrorists were re-titled something else like Contras or Rebels would they still be 'sub-human' and worthy of being held captive and abused.

Since when did abuse of human beings become elevated as a source of national pride, Liz and Dick-less?
