Mortimer Zuckerman announces he will not run for the Senate
Source: NY Daily News

The field in the battle for a New York Senate seat became a little clearer Tuesday when Mortimer B. Zuckerman announced he would not join the race.

Mr. Zuckerman, chairman and publisher of the Daily News, said personal and professional reasons were behind his decision not to challenge Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.

"I was encouraged by many major political figures in New York to look closely at running for Senate," Mr. Zuckerman said.

"However, at this time, it is very difficult to see how I can devote the necessary time to either a campaign, or to working in Washington, if I were to win."

Now in the On-Deck Circle, Number 29, GEORGE PATAKI!

7. Actually, no...
First, Zuckerman is $$$RICH$$$ (I've been to his apartment and seen his authentic Roman mosaic-inlaid coffee table), and could afford to bankroll a respectible political run. Second, whatever you think of his politics, you can't dispute that he's well versed on national, world and business issues, as opposed to Pataki, who was a local political hack who advanced to the Governor's Mansion when Mario Cuomo outstayed his welcome.

3. I am surprised that Mort said no!
The news this morning was that he was about to take the plunge. He was the one with the deep pockets who could have given trouble to Kirsten Gillibrand.

Stick to the Daily News, Mort!
