Bowles, Simpson to Head Debt Commission
Source: Wall Street Journal

WASHINGTONPresident Barack Obama is plowing ahead with a commission to tackle the federal debt despite resistance from Republican leaders.

Mr. Obama will name former Clinton White House Chief of Staff Erskine Bowles and former Republican Sen. Alan Simpson as co-chairmen of the commission Thursday when he signs an executive order creating the panel, an administration official said.

The commission's job will be to help bring down the federal budget deficit to 3% of gross domestic product by 2015, compared with nearly 10% today, and to propose ways to hold down the surging costs of government programs such as Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. The president will also ask the panel to look at the U.S. tax code and has not ruled out tax increases for the middle class should the commission deem them necessary.
---

The executive order, announced during Mr. Obama's State of the Union address, has been delayed as the White House tried to rally support for the panel. Officials say Mr. Obama will move forward for now with or without Republicans.

I thought the deficit problem was solved. Isn't that why we didn't hear peep about it from January 2001 to January 2009?

10. respectfully disagree. Born a multimillionaire, married a multimillionaire, brutal to staff.
And has a pro-corporate, pro-globalization view of the world. Imagine Arne Duncan-type K-12 policies but applied to run one of the country's best university systems. Even the most cutthroat academic administrators I knew--ones who are very attentive to the bottom line--left when he was hired to run the UNC system. He didn't give a crap about faculty (peasant) input. What do they know? He's where he is because of high birth.

But he certainly knows how to cut budgets and work people 20 hours a day while berating them.

At least he's not taking Geithner's job. That was the rumor around here for a while.

11. Went to a fundraiser for him when he ran for Senate...
Walked out when he said that we needed to invade Iraq because they had Weapons of Mass Destruction. That was just after we had invaded and many of us NC'linians had protested the Invasion before it began in a huge march (thousand people or more)at the Capitol and all over NC. Someone asked him if it was necessary for us to invade Iraq and that was his answer, he said as an insider who had worked in Clinton Administration. "Yes, Saddam had weapons." He didn't win the election.

I have no use for him.

12. More "Change" we can believe in..... I was expecting Lee Hamilton
along with Simpson. How many hacks can we bring out to "serve" the "system" once again.

17. he's DLC total establishment, with a false "aw shucks" persona veiling anger & entitlement
I've seen him reduce a teacher to tears after she had the audacity to politely question whether giving automatic pay increases to math/sci teachers and not English teachers was fair. From a friend who's much higher up the food chain than Erskine, I hear that he's oh-so-polite to those folks, but he's vicious to his VPs and staff. And not perfectionistic driven kind of stuff. Mean and petty stuff.

He does put in some hours--I'll grant him that.

My awful thought after the Haiti earthquake was how long was it going to be before he translated the deaths of 200K plus people into an updated gimmicky metaphor for his "vision for North Carolinians." Since before his inauguration as UNC system president, he's gone around saying, "we're facing an economic tsunami from Asia!!" And to him, it's all the teachers' fault that our graduates aren't "competing." You know, cuz if they had all of those "21st century skills" (another gimmick) they'd be fully employed in the US right now.

I was at that march with my children!

Because forming a Debt reduction commission must be about killing Social Security.....

Kind of like enacting Health Care Reform must have been about installing death panels. :eyes:

If you fail disastrously at most jobs, you get sent packing. But, there are different rules for Washington policy wonks. The same crew who could not see the $8 trillion housing bubble that wrecked the economy are convening in Washington this week to hatch new schemes to take away people's Social Security and Medicare in the name of "fiscal responsibility."
