Islamic Nations Object to Annan Directive
UNITED NATIONS -- Islamic nations objected Monday to new directive that U.N. staffers from countries that recognize same-sex marriages or domestic partnerships can now receive benefits for their gay or lesbian partners.

Iran, speaking on behalf of the 57-nation Organization of the Islamic Conference, said the group was not only "concerned about extending the scope of the family" eligible for benefits but "opposes the presumption" that same sex partners should qualify.

The directive, which took effect on Feb. 1, says "family status for the purposes of entitlements" will be determined by the staffer's nationality. A legally recognized marriage or domestic partnership will qualify that staff member "to receive the entitlements provided for eligible family members," it says.

By providing U.N. benefits only to nationals whose countries provide similar benefits -- less than a dozen of the 191 U.N. member states -- diplomats said the directive by Secretary-General Kofi Annan had sought to avoid confrontation.

4. I was mostly noting the irony, not making any suggestion
"anybody who doesn't think like me can sod off" is usually the main pillar of "fundies" (whatever they are), but lo and behold!..

5. we didn't start that culture war.
how sanctimonious you are:

"take it"

no more taking it. we stand up for ourselves. problem?

your version of tolerance is what is sending this planet back into the stone age.

they slam, we are magnanimous, boom!

no, we do not tolerate discrimination, and yes, it does make us angry.

problem?

12. As my dear old granny used to say,
"Don't become so open-minded you become empty-headed."

There's a big difference between a generally tolerant live-and-let-live attitude towards all your fellow human beings and letting someone stone your sister to death because she was raped and is now "impure".

I have no tolerance for those seeking to bully others into living the kind of life they think we should all be living. Especially when 90% of them are transparent hypocrites.

Guess that makes me intolerant, but what the hell.

Something like that.. Not really either, strictly speaking, but easily mistaken for them on occasion.

11. What "Our" fundies are doing at the UN...
"...The U.S. representative at today's session, Elizabeth Nakian, declined to
address the controversy at the meeting. A spokesman for the U.S. mission
to the United Nations, Robert A. Wood, said, "We understand that it's a
complicated issue. We are currently reviewing the U.N. bulletin and
studying its implications." ...

Also interesting point about Polygamy:

"...The United Nations has recognized polygamy, a common practice in the
Islamic world, as a legitimate form of marriage and permits employees to
divide their benefits among more than one wife. But the decision to expand
that right to same-sex partners has fueled intense opposition...."

Wonder what the Vatican has to say about that? :eyes:
