The United States will temporarily allow orphaned children from Haiti into the United States to receive needed care after the earthquake in their country, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said on Monday.

"We are committed to doing everything we can to help reunite families in Haiti during this very difficult time," Napolitano said in a statement.

"While we remain focused on family reunification in Haiti, authorizing the use of humanitarian parole for orphans who are eligible for adoption in the United States will allow them to receive the care they need here," she said.

Hopefully 'temporarily' means until they get adopted.

Several nations aim to speed up pending Haiti adoptions

The US and the Netherlands are aiming to speed up the process to allow dozens of Haitian orphans to join adoptive families as quickly as possible.

The children had adoptions pending before last week's earthquake but there are fears that in many adoption cases vital paperwork will have been lost.

Orphanages are among the many buildings wrecked or damaged by the quake.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told CNN she was "personally directing that we do everything we can to try to find and identify those children who are already adoptable... and to try to expedite all the paperwork... to get them to their new home."

1. YES!
These kids have homes waiting with food and hugs. It will, sadly, take five minutes to refill those emptied orphanages.

3. The difficulty is the perception of stealing children

But I'm all for evacuating as many children as possible on a defined basis to address trauma and educational continuity.

5. On normal days I'm all for making parents jump thru hoops.
But the fewer children needing food and care in Haiti, the more for the rest. These children are claimed. They are documented by videos and pictures if every other bit of paperwork is lost. If they stay they might die. GET THEM OUT.
