Iraq excludes 500 candidates from parliamentary elections
Source: DPA

Baghdad - Iraq's Independent High Electoral Commission has announced that around 500 candidates have been excluded from parliamentary elections set for March 7.

A commission source said Friday that the body received a letter from a government Accountability and Justice Commission listing names of candidates barred from running in the elections.

These candidates, who were barred either for their loyalty to the banned Baath party or for giving false information on their curriculum vitae, can appeal the commission's decision in court.

Media reports said that Defence Minister Abdul Kadir al-Obeidi and Saleh al-Mutlaq, a Sunni lawmaker who leads the National Dialogue Front, were among the list.

Tensions have been high in Iraq since 14 politicians and parties with links to the former ruling Baath Party, now banned under the constitution, were prohibited last Friday from participating in the March parliamentary elections.

2. Democracy....why you cant import it with the barrel of a gun...
That constitution that the Bush administration rammed through is a farce.
We have NO damned business in that country..or running their elections.
Bring our troops home now!

3. I'm wondering ...

how the United States treated Confederate States Politicians in the immediate aftermath of our Civil War. Anyone familiar with the period 1865-1870?
