AP Exclusive: Gates to stay at Pentagon this year
Source: AP

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama's most prominent holdover from the Bush administration — Defense Secretary Robert Gates — is staying on for at least another year.

Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell told The Associated Press late Thursday that Gates and Obama agreed last month that Gates would stay on as Pentagon chief. The commitment is open-ended, but would be for at least the rest of 2010.

Obama asked Gates to stay on shortly after Obama won the 2008 presidential election. The move was meant to maintain stability in a time of two wars, and made good on an Obama promise to include Republicans among his close advisers.

8. Who would you substitute?
Bearing in mind, that the Secretary of Defense doesn't have the ability to override policies of the President.

11. Apparently Obama feels there is no qualified Democrat
Why not fill up his whole administration with Republicans since they "don't have the ability to override the policies of the President." How delusional.

15. Wes Clark is a possibility
Richard Clarke is another. Certainly I could come up with others without much effort.

The remnants of the Bush administration need to be removed from positions of power.

18. I'd rather see Clarke as Director of National Intelligence -- with his first job...
... the integration of most personnel at the other civilian intel agencies (such as the NCTC) into the CIA (keeping in mind that many personnel on the domestic side of those agencies should be with Justice).

Clarke is one of the last honest spies.

19. I agree
Richard Clarke's name just came to the top of my head. Certainly I could come up with some other military types I'd prefer as Sec Def if I took a little time to think about it.

2. I'm cool with this.
Gates seems a competent, civil servant and a shake-up at the Pentagon would look a bit dodgy right about now.
