NATO chief says no compromise with Russia over Georgia
Source: RIA Novosti

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said on Thursday the Western military bloc was not prepared to compromise with Russia on Georgia.

When asked by journalists whether his talks with Russian leaders meant the alliance had changed its position on the August 2008 war between Russia and Georgia, Rasmussen said NATO was not ready to reach a compromise on issues of fundamental importance.

NATO froze ties with Russia following the brief armed conflict with the ex-Soviet Caucasus state and the recognition by Moscow of Georgia's breakaway regions, but relations have improved in recent months.

Rasmussen is on his first official visit to Moscow seeking greater Russian assistance for international operations in Afghanistan.

3. Yep. " Nato fails to secure Russian help"
Nato fails to secure Russian help

Nato Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has failed to gain any commitment from Russia to help win the war against the Taliban insurgency.

On Wednesday Mr Rasmussen asked Moscow to provide helicopters to Afghanistan and also requested Russian help in training the Afghan air force.

But he told the BBC he had received no positive response from the Kremlin.

Mr Rasmussen's visit is the first by a Nato chief since relations chilled after last year's Russian-Georgian war.

The three-day visit, which has included meetings with President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, signifies the alliance's determination to strengthen ties with Moscow, analysts say. ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8418292.stm

5. Russia: NATO Chief Dismisses Treaty
NATO’s secretary general, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, said Thursday that he saw no need for a new security treaty for Europe proposed by Russia. “We do have a framework already,” he said in Moscow, where he was trying to win Russian help for the war in Afghanistan. President Dmitri A. Medvedev published a draft post-cold-war security pact last month that he said would replace NATO and other institutions.
