War in Western Sudan Threatens to Destroy Hopes for Peace in African Natio
Voice of America
Ken Schwartz
12 Mar 2004

Sudan is on the verge of a peace deal ending its devastating 20-year long North-South civil war. But a separate war in the western Darfur region is threatening to not only destroy hopes for peace, but create another African crisis.

Testifying before a U.S. House Subcommittee on Africa Thursday, senior U.S. Agency for International Development official Roger Winter said the problems in Darfur are pushing the Sudanese peace process to the edge of a steep cliff. "Arguably, this is the worst humanitarian emergency in Africa and perhaps in the world at this moment," he said.

1. so sad
ive meet some sudanese and they are shocked (SHOCKED!) when they find an American who actually knows where Sudan is and whats going on there. That place has been a bloody mess for years and lots of people are dying, just because the fundies are hell bent on killing each other. Too bad DK isnt in office....I bet he could help sort it all out ;)

Malnutrition And Risk Of Disease In Sudan's Darfur Region, Says Doctors Without Borders
Joe De Capua

In Sudan’s Darfur region, where government troops and militias are battling rebels, thousands of displaced people are trying to find safe haven. But as they gather in towns in large numbers, there’s evidence of growing malnutrition and risk of disease, especially measles.
Doctors Without Borders is one of the few humanitarian groups in the region. Ton Koene is the emergency relief coordinator for the Dutch branch of Doctors Without Borders, also known as MSF. From Amsterdam, he spoke to English to Africa reporter Joe De Capua about the situation in Darfur, beginning with conditions in the town of Garsilla. He said the population there numbers around 100,000, of which 80,000 are believed displaced from other locations.
