Gay Marriage Fails (NYS Senate), 24-38

After an historic debate that lasted close to three hours, the Senate today rejected a bill that would have made New York the sixth state in the nation to legalize same-sex marriage.

The final vote was 24-38. Seven Democrats voted "no", while not a single Republican voted "yes."

That's really unfair! Lots of us here in CA are working VERY hard to overturn Prop. H8. Just as the Civil Rights movement had LOTS of caring, involved activist Caucasians, so does the Civil Rights struggle for the GBLT community have lots of support from the straight community. 6. We have to face it, without courts it won't happen anytime soon.

Alfred Kuhn wrote a book about scientific revolutions. In his research he discovered than even supposed rational scientists pretty much had to die out before the new paradigm became embedded in science. If it is this way with rational and thoughtful scientists imagine what we are facing with average people, let alone wingnuts.

Unless we have courts come down on our side consistently it will be a slow slog. Without courts the vote would have eventually arrived for women, but more slowly. Eventually racial equality would have arrived, but again, much more slowly.

Know this however--equality in marriage will eventually arrive. Slowly without the help of courts, or more quickly with the help of the courts. But as far as changing minds? That is rare. It usually requires the death of the old, and the ascendancy of the young.

Also about leaders of revolutions in science and the correlation with birth order... the gist is that all (almost all) revolutions in science were lead by latter borns... First born scientists tend to support the status quo... Sulloway has since done much research about the natural origins of conservative and liberal thinking.

straddle the fence on this issue. They want the support of those who want gay rights, but they also do not want to alienate voters with 'traditional' values. So they take a stance that is to the left of Republicans but which still falls short of what marriage equity proponents want. It may not be right, but is sure seems to work in getting elected.

New York State Senate Votes Down Gay Marriage Bill

ALBANY — The State Senate defeated a bill on Wednesday that would legalize same-sex marriage, after an emotional debate that touched on civil rights, family and history. The vote means that the bill, pushed by Gov. David A. Paterson, is effectively dead for the year and dashes the optimism of gay rights advocates, who have had setbacks recently in several key states.

The bill was defeated by a decisive margin of 38 to 24. The Democrats, who have a bare, one-seat majority, did not have enough votes to pass the bill without some Republican support, but not a single Republican senator voted for the measure. Still, several key Democrats who were considered swing votes also opposed the bill.

Mr. Paterson made an unusual trip to the Senate floor minutes after the last vote was cast, saying, “These victories come and so do the losses, but you keep on trying.”

The state’s Roman Catholic bishops, who had actively lobbied against the bill, said they were pleased by the vote.

To overcome this problem, the culture must change. To change the culture, opinions of homosexuality have to change. This is akin to asking Americans to live in a color-less world or a sex-less world.

Equality will never come to America until our culture of different-ness is removed. I have never understood why the civil rights, feminist and gay movements have not worked together very well. If those three groups teamed up under the banner of equality, real change can come to America.

I have been putting in quite a bit of time in targeting the state senators that think gays in New York are 2nd class citizens.

I have done 3 blogposts so far, including contact information, voting records, and other relevant source information that will be helpful when it comes time to challenge them in primaries. Every one of them must be challenged. I am sharing this issue here, because it is a waste of resources to have the info and not have it available to the activists that will...hopefully...use it.

..you find solid candidates to run against them ASAP. It's possible (I got a pro-choice reformer elected two years ago in place of an "old school" Democrat) but time is running short.

If the glbt advocacy groups do not try and find a candidate to run against these people, then we will know the extent of their impotency. At least make the effort.

There are certain seats we cannot win with a progressive Democratic candidate (Aubertine's, for example). However, in the NY 23d Congressional race, the Republican who dropped out of the race was far superior on social issues to the Democrat (that won over the Conservative candidate that forced Dede Scozzafava out).

I will take a progressive Republican (as few as there are) over a Rahm Emanuel, Blue Cruss Democrat, anytime.

I was a lifelong Democrat...now voting solely as an Independent progressive.
