Ohio's Unemployment Rate Increases (10.5%)

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio's unemployment rate has gone up for the first time in three months, to 10.5 percent in October from 10.1 percent in September.

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services said joblessness increased despite slightly more hiring by both services and goods-producing businesses.

Department director Douglas Lumpkin said more workers found themselves unemployed and looking for work, keeping the state's labor market weak.

The number of workers unemployed in Ohio last month was 618,000, up from 594,000 in September.

But nonfarm payroll employment rose by 1,400.

Ohio joblessness had fallen in both August and September. Officials said the reason was that job seekers were getting discouraged and dropping out of the labor force.

3. Over 30% in the Detroit Tri-County area

The Great Depression had a national unemployment rate of 20% or 1 in 5 folks out of work.

Wayne County, Oakland County and Macomb County (Michigan) combined have almost a 1 in 3 folks out of work.

No one-upsmanship intended on my post. We are all hurting.

The numbers are staggering.

He's in farm equipment so hopefully he's more immune but I don't know.

14. For what it's worth, my friend who does asparagus, cherries and apples

over on the west side of the state has had a good year. There was an absolute bumper crops of apples, which made the prices for those go down, but asparagus and cherries were good this year.

One of my Mom's neighbors is stuck with a huge number of apples. I've encouraged her to suggest to him that he contact church groups in Muskegon, where people are hurting, to see if they'd like to come up and pick apples for their own use. He'd get a charitable deduction and extra credit in heaven. His family is seriously, but decently religious, and belong to a mainstream denomination that's everywhere and has a sister denomination in the African-American community.

The folks who rent my uncle's place (corn and hay) are doing well, too.

World food stocks are low, and the agricultural export market is in good shape compared to many other markets.

Those folks who are trying to farm in Detroit may be on to something, particularly if they go into the fruits and vegetables line. They help themselves and make some money, too.

It went from 15.3% to 15.1%. Unemployment seems to have stabilized around 15 percent for the last few months: October (15.1%), Sept (15.3%), August (15.2%) July (15.0%), June (15.2%). I hope this is a good sign...it's hard to be optimistic after a decade of job losses.

10. It is definitely bad there

Pretty much forced me out of the state, over a year unemployed there and I was only able to get two interviews. I feel bad for you guys out there.

12. I moved from Ohio to South Dakota four and a half years

ago, for a job and because I'd had enough of not finding anything or being laid off from whatever I'd find. Couldn't have made a better move. I'm now married and work is steady for both of us. Most of my family is still back there, though, so I worry about them, of course. And I return a couple times a year for visits and it's very depressing to see how bad it's getting and will likely continue to get. I'm very glad I'm not there anymore, but I'm still connected enough to feel terrible about it.

Of course, in Cleveland, nothing will change until they quit being so obsessed with the fucking Browns (and other sports, too, for that matter) to the exclusion and at the expense of everything else. But just try telling them that.

17. Ohio unemployment

It is definitely an alarming trend. I think Ohio has the highest number of unemployed people in the country due to its population and lack of new industrial development. Unfortunately I do not have a any solutions or suggestions. I honestly hope nation's economy improves. By the way, check here for Ohio unemployment trend (scroll down on that page to see the graph). Are we heading for 12% in the next couple of months?
