Blast hits U.S. base in Kabul

An explosion hit one of the main U.S. military bases in Kabul early on Friday, the military said.

Sergeant First Class Kevin Bell, a spokesman for U.S. and NATO-led forces, said the blast struck at Camp Phoenix, a giant base near the airport in the Afghan capital, used mainly by U.S. troops and also some from other NATO allies.

He gave no further details.

An Afghan police source said the blast was caused by a suicide bomber. The area had been sealed off by Western forces, and he believed there were casualties, he said.

12. Here's what I think will happen. The US and Pakistan will agree to allow

US troops to guard Pakistani nukes. That will remove the threat of the Taliban or al Qaeda gaining access. That will also give us a presence in the region. From there we can do surgical strikes on any perceived threat in Afghanistan without having bases in Afghanistan.

11. Afghanistan Suicide Attack Wounds More Than 20

Afghan officials say more than 20 people have been wounded in a suicide car bomb attack on a convoy of vehicles near a U.S.-run NATO military base in Kabul.

NATO says nine of its soldiers and 10 civilian contractors were among those wounded. It says the rest of the casualties were bystanders, including several Afghans.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the bombing Friday outside Camp Phoenix.

Several attacks have targeted international operations in the Afghan capital, Kabul, in recent months, including attacks on a U.N. guesthouse and the Indian embassy.
