Bart Stupak: 'There Will Be Hell To Pay' If My Amendment Is Removed'

Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) is warning fellow Democrats not to mess with his restrictive anti-abortion amendment.

Pro-choice outrage was sparked by the inclusion of a provision in the House health care bill making it harder for private insurers to cover abortion. President Obama himself suggested that the language disrupted the status quo and should be taken out of the final legislation. Abortion rights supporters in Congress requested a meeting with the president next week to discuss the issue.

Now Stupak is saying he won't go easily.

"We won because need us," Stupak said. "If they are going to summarily dismiss us by taking the pen to that language, there will be hell to pay. I don't say it as a threat, but if they double-cross us, there will be 40 people who won't vote with them the next time they need us -- and that could be the final version of this bill."

As for content specifically on this thread, I don't believe that it's helpful to build up the repugs as some superman that has it all together. They have their own problems with members having differing views on major issues. Take probably the biggest "red meat" issue, abortion. Bush didn't even have a cabinet that was all pro-life.

And if I wuz a stratagerist being paid to help them on kill the health bill - my advice would be that all they had to do was vote against Stupak's amendment. Without the repugs, the amendment then fails. Then, without the Stupak amendment, the repugs and all the blue dogs have a majority and vote against the whole bill. It would have been defeated on the floor last Saturday.

Like I said, if I wuz...but I ain't. I do argue a lot of devil's advocate positions here - because I judge it's important to look at multiple sides of issues realistically. If DU is just all cheerleaders, the result is group-think.

All day long, I kept hearing the argument that pro-choice Democrats are going to have to compromise because Pelosi just doesn't have the votes otherwise. It's very telling that with all this talk about how pro-choice women can't be stubborn about their little needs, there is nobody out there complaining that Stupak and his crowd are making the perfect the enemy of the good. He and the other "pro-life" Democrats are commonly and without criticism portrayed as voting for their principles, as if they have no choice in the matter. (Indeed, the whole argument over funding is defined by the fact that "pro-life" advocates apparently cannot be forced to pay taxes for something that goes against their principles.

Apparently some principles are just more important than others.

If these people actually want fewer abortions then they would support full access to contraception, and full access to quality health care. Banning all abortions does not make abortions stop happening, it just makes them illegal and very dangerous. Many, if not all, of these reviled late term abortions could have been prevented by having adequate pre-natal health care that started well before the woman got pregnant.

Instead, these people seem to want to restrict access to all forms of contraception, and health care for people in general. Do they want to stop abortions, or do they want to increase the birthrate as much as possible? That will be the outcome of their long-term plan, unless they offer tubal ligation to anyone who wants it for free. What do they really want?
