State investigators taking dozens of computers from ACORN office on Canal Street

Investigators in khaki pants and polo shirts loaded several dozen computers and other electronic items into an SUV. They are also carrying records out of the building on handcarts.

The large office building sits at the corner of Dorgenois and Canal. ACORN staffers were given no notice that a search would be conducted today, Herring said.

"They have been extremely cooperative," she said.

6. yes. I knew that but looked him up....
He seems like a dedicated sort of person. I really know nothing about other that his name comes up with ACORN issues.

Until his election to state Attorney General, Buddy personally tried most major felony cases in his three-parish district. He continued to advise police juries, port commissions, school boards, hospital service districts, and law enforcement on many other legal matters.

Buddy's dedication to the office he held for almost 3 decades is exemplified by his accomplishments. Buddy achieved a 99% conviction rate over the past 29 years, and he holds the highest per capita collection rate for back child support in the state. He helped establish pre-trial diversion programs for adult and juvenile first-time offenders, and he has increased funding for the indigent defenders program in the 6th Judicial District. ...............

13. Do you know how most DAs with 99% conviction rates get 99% conviction rates?
Edited on Sat Nov-07-09 01:41 AM by happyslug
By NOT taking any cases where the defendant may or can put up an adequate defense. i.e. any case where the other side can afford a team of investigators to double check the evidence and a team of defense lawyers who can take apart both the DA's case AND present the evidence that supports their client's case (remember OJ Simpson's murder case)? I am NOT talking about cases where the Defendant may be innocent but cases where the evidence can be interpreted to show less then "beyond a reasonable doubt". DA who want 99% conviction rates avoid those cases, most often by pleading down to something that is acceptable to the Defendant (remember most cases is NOT that the defendant is innocent but what is he or she guilty of, i.e. did he or she commit First Degree Murder, Second Degree Murder or manslaughter?).

Also note when a person is found guilty of manslaughter, when the Defendant is willing to plead that from day one, but the DA refuses to agree to such an plead for her wants Murder in the first Degree, DAs still view that conviction of manslaughter as a "win" on their records.

Sorry, a 99% conviction rate can only be achieved one way, gaming the system so the cases you take on are not even close when it comes to the issue of innocence.

My point is be careful of any attorney who claims a 99% winning record, that can only be achieved by gaming the system and many DAs do just that to get a 99% conviction rate. I do NOT know if this Attorney General when he was a DA gamed the system, but just warning you to be careful of the claim.

assuming ACORN people wouldn't "make" them, but would identify with them, bond with them, and open themselves to national ridicule and contempt. Hats off to these godly patriots.

9. There are
plenty of organizations that ca step up and fill the void left by ACORN.

ACORN isn't the only organization around that can do the job. This case actually sounds valid.

10. It sounds like ACORN was the victim in this.
Money was embezzled from them. Why would you think that this case will cause a void?

14. Wrong, and that is why the rightwing have been after them for decades
I hate to disappoint you, but ACORN will not only survive, as it has survived these attempts to shut them down for decades, it will be stronger.

There is no other organization that has stood up for the voiceless in this country, as ACORN has. They have made sure that Banks and Realtors do not discriminate against honest, decent minorities as they did before the passing of the Community Reinvestment Act. And that was the beginning of the rightwing attacks on ACORN. Those people who starting in the '70s bought their own homes, were some of the most responsible home buyers and for 30 years, proved that discrimation is not only evil, it is not economical.

They helped millions of under-privileged people register to vote, and NO, before you decide to perpertuate that LIE, they were never involved in voter fraud. That has been completely exposed for the lie it is, so don't waste any time repeating it, I will have zero problem proving that Fox lie, to be false. Republicans do not want poor people voting. ACORN therefore, is a huge thorn in their sides, as they have tried in every election, to take that right away from the poor.

The smearing and attacking of ACORN is for one reason only, it is pure rightwing Racism, and it is shameful to see cowardly Democrats going along with it.

Go ACORN, you've got millions of supporters and keep up the good work. We know that Congress doesn't represent the poor, someone has to.

Don't be shy. Name a few.

What is it about this case that, in your mind, seems so damning of ACORN?

Did you even read the article linked in the OP?

It seems like people are trying to spin this into a crime that ACORN committed. As far as I can see, they were the victims in this.
