More Details Emerge on Suspected Fort Hood Gumnan; Former Classmate Remembers Him Railing Against War on Terror

(CBS/ AP) A classmate of the Fort Hood shooting suspect says Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan was an outspoken opponent of the U.S. war on terror and called it a "war against Islam."

Dr. Val Finnell was a classmate of Hasan's at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md. Both attended a master's in public health program in 2007 and 2008.

Finnell says he got to know Hasan in an environmental health class. At the end of the class, students gave presentations. Finnell says other classmates wrote on subjects such as dry cleaning chemicals and mold in homes, but Hasan's topic was whether the war against terror was "a war against Islam." Finnell described Hasan as a "vociferous opponent" of the terror war.

Finnell says Hasan told classmates he was "a Muslim first and an American second."

In his job counseling returnees, he heard so many horror stories about devaluation of Iraqi lives, that it seems he confused cause w/ effect. Perhaps his religion prevented him from feeling he could claim a conscientious objection to this war as some others have done. Or in the death-worshipping atmosphere of an army base, he just grew to hate the soldiers who perpetrated these acts against his co-religionists and came to feel he had to take down some of them before they took down other Muslims. To compound things he even convinced two others to join in.

we need to understand the cause of this type of violence. Maybe, as an individual, he was predisposed to violence but on a larger scale there are other factors. You simply can't blame this on someone's religion. Those who don't come to this understanding are the animals.

you make it sound like we are feeling sorry for him and are defending what he did. That's not the case at all. I'm sure he will face the full consequences of the law, as he should.

The larger issue is how to prevent further acts of domestic terrorism, and in the larger war on terror, how to prevent populations of Muslim groups from becoming further radicalized. My biggest fear is that there are warmongers who live to see these types of acts become an even bigger threat so that they can have the US fully engaged in war on the Middle East.
