1. 7 Dead, 12 Wounded at Ft. Hood
<snip>

"Officials at the Fort Hood Army Base in Killeen say seven people are dead and at least 12 are wounded in a mass shooting on the Fort property.

The attack apparently happened at the Soldier Readiness Center.

Army personnel say they are not certain whether the victims are civilians or military personnel.

The Fort Hood public affairs spokesman said the Army is setting up a special operations center to handle the response."

292. WTF?
What the fuck do you expect them to do in terms of investigative journalism in real-time during a crisis that has the base in lockdown? Call up all their high level contacts on the locked down base that are busy doing their jobs and compile the information they provide, cross check it and report it?

Anyone in a position to know exact details likely has a job to do right now. And if they were fucking off talking to a reporter instead they should be court marshaled.

Get a grip. You can't have investigative journalism in real time.

2. Update
One unconfirmed report indicates an armed gunman has fired several shots and may have hit several people.

Apparently, authorities are saying that Ft. Hood is "not secure," so it sounds like someone dangerous is loose on the grounds.

191. His avatar? You mean a US Army logo? That's suddenly a horrible thing?
And thanks for putting words in other people's mouths to excuse the fact that you can't back up your claim.

213. Ridiculous bullshit like this is the reason that liberals get tagged as crazy hippies.
Your entire point of argument seems to be that America is everything that's wrong with the world, and that if we just closed down the country and gave up our evil militaristic ways there'd be world peace. :eyes:

394. As oppossed to what.
You should travel the globe a bit. You haven't seen evil militaristic. I lived in Peru for a few years and while parts of it are lovely, there are other parts where people have literally vanished and have never been heard from again. The difference is that here in America when you disappear the government will actually look for you.

463. As opposed to supporting I(with money, materials, and training)
a long list of evil militaristic governments and movements, as short list of which would include:

Savimbi in Angola
the El Salvador govt. in the 1980s and 90s
the contras
the Colombian govt
the Guatemalan govt
the Congo
the Honduran govt
the South African govt until ANC won
Haiti
Nicaragua

Are you under some delusion that the US uses its forces and money to support freedom and democracy? In the entire history of US foreign policy the only example of that I can find is South Korea. In virtually every other case the US has supported evil, corrupt dictatorships.

You'd have to have blinders on to have traveled the globe and not seen what's going on.

torture, etc. Those things can be done very cheaply. Very sad testament to the evil and depravity that can exist. Are you familiar with what has, or is currently going on over there? If not you may want to research it a little. It is very disturbing.

Because it gets expensive to do it outside your country, or around the world.
Mogadishu does it mostly right at home fighting one another and stealing the neighbors 10 year old daughter for "entertainment". They also tend to use machetes a lot to conserve on ammo - sometimes for the "fun" of it.

Seriously many on this forum have absolutely no idea of the violence and cruelty that exists in this world where there are few, if any cameras to record it.

386. Nuking cities though, that takes mula...
If killing, rape and torture can be done on the cheap, makes one wonder what can be done with the kinda money we pump in to our war machine.

Killing, rape and torture sound so ominous compared to a "daisy-cutter" or "white-phosphor." Is the end result much different? Do we not rape, torture and kill? Perhaps not as systemically... Should we nit-pick about a matter of degrees or agree it's all wrong?

I'm not very familiar with Mogadishu, perhaps I SHOULD research it. Though I generally prefer to devote my time to issues for which we share some responsibility and have greater capability to effect change. (AFAIK) I can't necessarily change what Mogadishu does. I CAN impact what WE do.

In any event I certainly agree with you that killing rape and torture are horrible, no matter who does it.

For the record, I don't think the US is the cause of all the world's problems. I think that is an over simplification.

-Andy

411. Side point, American soldiers were tortured and killed in an attempt to bring Mogadishu some peace.
Circa the Clinton administration. It didn't go so well, but sometimes we kill people and break things for a good cause. Kosovo would be another example.

In this world, there are some very bad people, and shaking your finger at them and yelling 'naughty naughty' is not enough to save their victims.

415. 'purveyor of violence' has a quite different meaning.
Such as 'starting shit', getting two nations to attack each other so that you might sell them armaments, or starting proxy wars, like we used to see between the US and Russia.

When King said that, he wasn't talking about the US invovlement in stopping the Nazis or Imperial Japan.
Even in that limited context, I don't believe King was correct, though we aren't entirely innocent of these charges. 'Greatest' title probably belongs to an entity that no longer exists.
