Intel is facing a federal lawsuit that accuses it of using "illegal threats" to dominate microchip sales.

The New York attorney general accuses Intel of using "bribery and coercion" to make computer manufacturers buy its chips instead of those from its rivals.

Andrew Cuomo said the anti-competition federal lawsuit follows an investigation lasting almost two years.

Intel said in a statement that the "decision to file suit against is just plain wrong".

Intel has ALWAYS been like this. On top for a few years, then a challenger comes, then the lawsuits begin.

I can't imagine how many MILLIONS they've wasted on lawyers and court costs.

US computer chip giant Intel used illegal tactics which stopped consumers getting better products and lower prices, it has been alleged.

The company has been accused of using "bribery and coercion" to keep a "stranglehold" on the microprocessor market.

The claims are made in an antitrust lawsuit filed by New York's Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.

He says Intel's actions unfairly restricted competitors and also "hurt average consumers who were robbed of better products and lower prices."

He said the company got exclusive agreements from large computer makers to use Intel's microprocessors in exchange for payments totalling billions of dollars.
