GOP Sweep: Big Governor Victories in Virginia, NJ

Independents who swept Barack Obama to a historic 2008 victory broke big for Republicans on Tuesday as the GOP wrested political control from Democrats in Virginia and New Jersey, a troubling sign for the president and his party heading into an important midterm election year.

Conservative Republican Bob McDonnell's victory in the Virginia governor's race over Democrat R. Creigh Deeds and moderate Republican Chris Christie's ouster of unpopular New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine was a double-barreled triumph for a party looking to rebuild after being booted from power in national elections in 2006 and 2008.

Heck... VA was a big enough loss that 2010 redistricting could easily cost us a two-seat swing over what it would have been if we controlled the process. Maybe three.

2. Do governor's races have anthing to do with healthcare?

Last I saw they run states, they do not vote in the Senate or House.

All exit polling I saw indicated voters were concerned with local issues when they voted for governor.

On the otherhand, we picked up a seat in NY23 -- another Dem vote in a district controlled by Republicans since the civil war.

But not in the way you may be asking.

The health care legislation does rely on states to implement certain parts of the plan... and a state could elect to say "no" I suppose.

Of course you're correct that they can't vote in Congress... but it's a certainty that this will impact the issue anyway.

And that's almost always the case. The question is who failed to show up and why... those people obviously didn't care as much about local issues.

10. No, it was the fact that my local paper had the same damn article

on page four of the A section--and our favorite "unbiased" AP reporter Liz Sidoti was the proud author.
