Iraqi woman, 20, dies; police in Arizona say father ran her over

November 2, 2009 7:59 p.m. EST

Noor Faleh Almaleki moved with her family to the U.S.
from Iraq in the mid-1990s, a police spokesman said.

CNN) -- A 20-year-old woman from Iraq has died in an Arizona hospital, nearly two weeks after her father, police say, ran her over with a car because she had become "too Westernized." Noor Faleh Almaleki died Monday of injuries suffered when she was run over October 20 in a parking lot in the Phoenix suburb of Peoria, Arizona, police there said. Authorities said they expect to change the aggravated assault charge against her father, Faleh Hassan Almaleki, 48, to more severe counts after meetings with prosecutors, Peoria police announced.

Peoria police said Faleh Hassan Almaleki believed his daughter had become "too Westernized" and had abandoned "traditional" Iraqi values. Peoria police spokesman Mike Tellef told CNN the family moved to the Phoenix area in the mid-1990s, and Almaleki was unhappy with his daughter's style of dress and her resistance to his rules.

After the incident, Almaleki's father drove to Mexico, abandoning his vehicle in Nogales, Peoria police said. He then made his way to Mexico City and boarded a plane to Britain, where authorities denied him entry into the country and put him on a plane back to the United States, police said.

A friend of the daughter, Amal Edan Khalaf, 43, also suffered serious injuries in the attack, police said. Almaleki faces a separate aggravated assault charge in connection with her injuries. He is currently held in Phoenix, with bail has been set at $5 million, Tellef said.

have benefited all in this situation. :eyes:

May the poor girl rest in peace. What a horrible thing for a parent to do to a child.

Seriously, if you do this shit I don't care about your religious hang-ups.

Sorry, this makes me mad. It's not only about what he did here, but it casts a bad shadow on the Muslims who are here happily integrating into American society instead of bringing the worst of their cultural garbage with them from the old country.

The item mentioning this was on here a couple of days ago, but has probably been buried by now.

I got the impression they liked her better than him.

8. There have been people living in what is now Iraq seemingly forever.
Remember the ancient Babylonians? Babylon was in Iraq. Before Iraq became Iraq, it was part of the Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans fought with the losing side in WWI, and ended up giving up all territory except modern-day Turkey. When the British and French, the victors in WWI, took over, they carved up the Ottoman empire not always with regard to who was living where. Hence the 3-way split in modern Iraq.

My point is that people can have a culture even if they don't have their own state.

As to the car, well, pick and choose. Isn't there a phrase something like "cafeteria Christians?"

Yes, but it would be a Kurdish culture, or a Shiite culture, or a Sunni culture, etc.

17. That the concept of "traditional Iraqi values" is meaningless
It's certainly a weak excuse for mowing down one's daughter with a car.

Iraq should never have existed. It's an artificial country.

9. This death makes me profoundly sad
She had her whole life ahead of her, and this man had no right at all to take it because she was her own woman.

I hope the bastard who pretended to be a father gets life without parole. He is a disgrace to his own species.

14. I just don't get it.
I don't understand this. I know it happens, but I cannot understand how religion takes such a hold over people.

When my daughter was born, I knew right away I'd do anything for her. I'd die for her. I'd do anything to protect her. I cannot fathom her ever doing anything that would change that. Anything. I sit here trying to think of what my daughter could do that would make me want to kill her and I can't.

The only thing I can conclude is that these people are just crazy. Crazy and defective - broken. They have no love for their children. I cannot understand this.
