Warsaw ghetto uprising head dies

The last surviving leader of the 1943 Warsaw ghetto uprising against the Nazis, Marek Edelman, has died at the age of 90.

The uprising - triggered by the Nazis' decision to send residents to concentration camps - lasted three weeks before it was crushed.

Mr Edelman, then 23, was one of 200 young Jews who fought German troops.

His friend, Paula Sawicka, told the Associated Press that he died "at home, among friends".

Certainly nobody ever faced worse odds.

I say "man", but I remember also that in what I've read about the uprising, women were often prominent in the first attacks on German soldiers. As the leader of brave fighters though he inevitably embodies the spirit of the whole.

Mr Edelman escaped and helped coordinate anti-Nazi resistance. After the war he became a doctor and joined Poland's democratic opposition, speaking out against racism and on human rights.

31. No that was the 1944 revolt of the Polish Home Army

In 1943 the Germans were still well into what is now the Ukraine. Kiev was still under German Occupation. Soviet forces did NOT enter Polish Territory till 3 January 1944. The Polish Home Army revolted in August 1944 hoping to Liberate Warsaw before the Soviet Army took it, but the Soviet Forces stayed outside Warsaw till the Germans had put down that revolt, then the Soviet Forces took Warsaw. The official Soviet position was they had fought a long campaign starting right after D-Day (The Soviet Summer Offensive was to coordinate with the Western Allies invasion of France. This was to force the Nazis to throw more and more troops against the Soviet Forces while the allies built up their forces in France).

9. The face of a man who has seen so much

My wife and I were in Warsaw on the anniversary of the uprising this year . We went to the Museum of Warsaw in the old town and saw the emotional display and day by day almost hour by hour account of the events. The bombed out old town was apparently rebuilt by the citizens using photos, paintings and plans of the original. The building programme took place over 12 years with little or no help from the soviet government.Another tribute to the resilience of the Polish people.

The bravery and heroism of Marek Edelman and his commrades needs to be honoured and remembered. Thanks for the posting.

I consider myself very knowledable about WWII, but am deeply ashamed to say that I did not know Mr. Edelman by name. I'll never forget it now.
