Rings finale gets DVD fast-track
Monday, March 8, 2004 - Page R2

Los Angeles -- The march to Middle-Earth will be shorter this time for the home-video release of the final chapter in The Lord of the Rings. The Return of the King comes to DVD and VHS May 25, New Line Cinema has announced. That's about three months quicker than the first and second parts of the fantasy trilogy, both of which hit video in late summer.

The announcement comes a week after the film bulldozed its way through the Academy Awards, earning a record-tying 11 Oscars, including best picture and director for Peter Jackson, and sweeping every category in which it was nominated.
(snip)

It's not a shameless plug, just wondering why their burners are so slow :D

2. Some of us will get both.
Watch the theatrical version until the extended one is ready. The "extras" on the theatrical version are never repeated on the other one.

In a few years, a high-definition version will be needed.

4. come to think of it, I never saw those deluxe editions... worth it?
come to think of it, I never saw the last one... come to think of it, I haven't seen a movie in a theater in MONTHS.

I suppose when you're editing a film all day and night for months, the last thing you want to do is go watch another one as a break.

5. are the extras on the theatrical release worth it?
I only own the extended versions of the first two and never really looked at the extras on the theatrical releases too closely? What are they and are they worth ponying up another thirty dollars for?

7. The extras are not bad....
And the theatrical release can usually be found for less than $30.

9. I would hope so
I paid less that $30 each for both extended editions on the day they were released. As I recall they were both $24.95. In fact I was in a store yesterday that had the original editions packaged together for $30. I may go back and pick that up now thT I know that their are diffferent extras on each version.

8. Return of the King
I am looking forward to its release - and so much earlier than I ever thought too. We'll buy both versions - the extended ones really are worth it.

I didn't get to see Return of the King when it was released in theaters because we had just adopted a little girl from China and getting out, even for a couple of hours, was not an option. She wouldn't stay with anyone but me for more than a nano-second at that point and the idea of taking an 18 month old toddler to ROTK just didn't pass muster. Now we are lucky and she will stay with my husband's daughter from his first marriage, so we can get out to the occasional movie, provided of course that we can afford the gas and my job doesn't get "outsourced".
