EU and OAS pull ambassadors from Honduras

New York - The European Union and Organization of American States (OAS) on Wednesday said they would pull their ambassadors out of Honduras. Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos and OAS Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza made the announcement on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The move was made in support of ousted President Manuel Zelaya, who was forced from office on June 28 but made a surprising return to Honduras on Monday. He is currently holed up in the Brazilian embassy in the Honduran capital.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon earlier Wednesday said the UN was pulling its technical assistance for scheduled November Honduran elections in response to the political crisis.

The de facto regime in Honduras has not been recognized by the international community.

Iran's usurpers are ultraconservative, theocratic, fundamentalist, antidemocratic, and have explicitly denied the Holocaust while claiming they have been selected to usher in the apocalyptic 12th Imam. Google it if you don't know what that involves.

They have executed teen-age gays by hanging them from cranes, enforced Seventh Century religious antifeminism with morality police who roam the streets, and think that stoning is a good way to deal with female adulterers (at least, they did until YouTube came along).

I'm not going any farther here. Someone either knows about this stuff, or chooses not to.

The U.S. government’s policy toward the de facto government that now rules Honduras can best be described as two-faced — expressing rhetorical outrage publicly while quietly continuing to prop up the putsch regime economically behind the scenes.

To date, the U.S. government has declined to declare officially that the June 28 overthrow and exiling of democratically elected Honduran President Manuel Zelaya was carried out via a “military” coup d'état — thereby avoiding the invocation of a U.S. law that would mandate a draconian cutoff in U.S. aid to the Honduran government.

OAS and EU agree on massive diplomatic effort to solve Honduras crisis

The Organization of American States, OAS, and the European Union agreed Wednesday to send their ambassadors in Honduras back to Tegucigalpa, the city which they left following the June coup that deposed constitutional president Manuel Zelaya.

OAS Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza and Spain’s Foreign Affairs minister Miguel Angel Moratinos made the announcement following a meeting in New York of delegates from South American countries and Madrid representatives acting for the European Union and European Community.

11. Astonishing mistake. Quite a difference in the effect of sending them BACK instead of AWAY.

They seem to think doing this will help. There isn't any explanation of how it would help, of course. Maybe they will attempt to go into the embassy themselves, with food and water. Something must be done soon, clearly.

13. Worth repeating--THIS IS **NOT** TRUE!

Thanks to rabs for catching the error! It didn't make sense to me that the OAS and EU would entirely abandon the country with Zelaya, and his family and his staff, isolated in the Brazilian embassy and Brazil's embassy personnel at risk as well, and also with Zelaya's millions of supporters perhaps at the most risk (because they can be picked off as individuals or groups without corpo/fascist media attention). It would seem to be a moment for the opposite to be happening--for a resurgence in international organizations and foreign delegations. I'm sure I've read that the UN and the US were already involved in getting electricity and water service restored to the embassy, and food delivered, as well as free passage for Brazilian embassy personnel and their families. And I would imagine that many other countries and groups are helping, within and outside of Honduras. (Zelaya had direct help from at least four countries--Venezuela provided the plane; it flew from Nicaragua to El Salvador; then he was taken cross-country, with the final leg in the boot of a car to the Brazilian embassy--and probably many more countries were involved--directly or indirectly; within or outside of Honduras, including the US--in pulling off that feat.)

International organizations and foreign embassies usually leave some personnel in a country where there is trouble of one kind or another, who stay there as long as they can, for many reasons--to continue whatever negotiations are under way, to protect their own citizens or employees in the country and to be able to evacuate them if necessary, and to manage projects or protect property. Usually it's just the top people who officially leave as a diplomatic statement, and families if there is serious danger. And I would imagine that many of these second level people who have remained in Honduras at OAS, UN and EU offices, and at embassies, have been very busy, indeed, in the current situation, trying to help Zelaya get restored to office and democracy restored to the country. And I also would have expected the opposite to be occurring--than what this article said--that the top diplomats and officials would be returning because they now have the real government--Zelaya's government--in the country, to talk to and help.

Anyway, that's what IS happening, apparently--according to the commenters above me: Zelaya's return has prompted a big international effort to get the coup to stand down. That makes sense. The OAS and the EU abandoning Honduras does not make sense at this moment.
