The Salt Lake Tribune

Their offenses were serious enough for prison time -- 10 felonies between them on charges of illegal trafficking in ancient American Indian artifacts -- but Blanding residents Jeanne Redd and daughter Jericca won't be locked up.

On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Clark Waddoups sentenced Jeanne Redd to 36 months' probation and a $2,000 fine and Jericca Redd to 24 months' probation and a $300 fine ....

But Waddoups declared he would "vary" from the guidelines, given where Jeanne Redd lives.

"This is a community where this kind of conduct" is commonly tolerated and "has been justified for a number of years," Waddoups said. "This is a woman who has spent her life as a member of her community."

TEN FELONIES, no time. This is despicable justice!!
This is blatant racism on the part of a Federal Court!
They all hate Indians there, so it is just fine!

Here's the Redneck Logic:
If your community thinks crime is okay, and you've lived all your life amidst criminals..... you will be forgiven for your crimes?

In this case it is excusing racism is against Native Americans, of course,
but the logic would be no different for hangings in the South, not? Or, how about gang killings?
What about Republicans stealing elections?

"Hey, all my friends do it your honor!"
"Well, okay then, go on home."

Each charge carried potential fines of $250,000 and up to 10 years in prison.

1. I have to tell this story.
In north Florida where I lived it is very easy to find old pottery pieces and other artifacts washed up on the beach. There was a man who had a collection that he had built up over twenty years or more, mostly pottery. After a hurricane he had went out on a beach that had been hit hard by erosion and found a human skeleton. Rather than report it he assumed it was an ancient indian and took it home. He was so proud of it that he built an elaborate display case for it. Word got out and the feds arrived. Turns out it was the bones of a union soldier who had been hastily buried after he had died of a fever during the post civil war occupation. The feds took everything he had collected from the beaches and fined him a huge sum of money, no jail time.

2. I wonder what the judge's sentence would have been if the Redd's had been caught digging
up the graves of the judge's family and ancestors.
