Court overturns firing of New Orleans police officer in beating

NEW ORLEANS — A state appeals court has overruled the New Orleans Police Department's firing of an officer involved in a high-profile, videotaped altercation after Hurricane Katrina.

The ruling essentially paves the way for former officer Robert Evangelist to return to duty, barring a further appeal to the state Supreme Court.
The incident received international attention after the altercation between several law enforcement officers and Robert Davis, a retired teacher, was taped by an Associated Press Television News crew.


Evangelist and another officer were later fired by Police Superintendent Warren Riley.
