Romanoff takes aim at grass-roots Dems in Senate (Co) bid

By PETER ROPER

With a phalanx of Democratic state lawmakers joining him, former state House Speaker Andrew Romanoff launched his bid for the U.S. Senate here early Wednesday, saying "Colorado is my cause" and promising to take stands on the issues, a jab at appointed Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., who is running to hold that seat next year.

"I don't need to take polls to know where I stand on the issues," Romanoff said, getting a laugh from the crowd of about 100 supporters who gathered at the Historic Arkansas Riverwalk of Pueblo for the beginning of what is expected to be a tough primary battle.

Romanoff is a veteran Colorado legislator who served as House speaker from 2005 to 2009, while Bennet was superintendent of Denver Public Schools when Gov. Bill Ritter appointed him to the Senate last January after former Sen. Ken Salazar left the seat to head the Interior Department.

Sherry Levinson shows her support for Andrew Romanoff as he announces his candidacy for the U.S. Senate in Pueblo on Wednesday.

Romanoff had the endorsement of 62 of 64 Democratic country chairmen during the appointment process when Ritter appointed Bennet, stunning rank-and-file Democrats to whom Bennet was an unknown.

1. This man has already secured my vote.
Bennet has not. He was my state rep, and an excellent Speaker of the House. I will donate money, time, and effort to oust Bennet and replaced with Romanoff, who I believe will be one of the top progressive Senators if given the opportunity. He has ALWAYS made an effort to keep all of us informed on the processes. He will win easily, since GOP has pretty much jackshit to put up for the other side.
