‘Evil this way comes’ — Militia founders warn of need to grow local militia effort(Alaska)
Source: The Redoubt Reporter

Alaskans should be afraid, but not of the formation of a militia.

That was the message of Norm Olson, co-founder of the Michigan Militia, who moved to Nikiski about five years ago and now is attempting to recruit citizen soldiers to expand the fledgling Alaska Militia founded on the Kenai Peninsula. Olson and Michigan Militia co-founder Ray Southwell, who also now lives in Nikiski, headed an informational meeting Thursday night at the Nikiski Recreation Center to explain the history, purpose and function of the militia, and what they see as the pressing need for it today.

“We’re looking at catastrophe just a couple months away — economic collapse, food shortages around the world, prices in stores are gonna go skyrocketing with this inflation — so there are people right now that are very uneasy. They may not want to admit it, but they have no place to turn,” Olson said.

He laid out an array of increasing threats to Americans’ liberty, freedoms and way of life: The government encroaching on individuals’ rights and perpetrating psychological warfare — largely carried out through the media — to create fear and quell an informed public; and a national economy poised on the brink of ruin, which will drag commerce and social order down with it. A collapse could well result in the declaration of martial law and a further trampling of individuals’ rights, Olson said.

“I’m convinced that times are coming when we are going to have to repel federal aggression, tyrannical oppressive federal aggression. They’re going to want to quell any kind of uprising, because it’s bad for politics,” Olson said.

27. Now I'd be the last person to agree with the militia mentality...
...because frankly it's immature, irresponsible and, at it's core, it's fear-based -- which makes it an unhealthy life-path to tread.

But if you don't understand where these people are coming from you're either a fool or an idiot. Don't make fun of them for wanting to withdraw or isolate themselves from a system that is clearly no longer the Democracy the early founders intended it to be, a system grown so corrupt that it's collapsing under it's own hubris and threatening to take all of us down with it.

These aren't the type of people I want to hang around with, but I've known enough of them to know they're not stupid and they're not some kind of Hollywood stereotype: they're real people, who're really concerned about the world their kids are growing up in. Mostly I feel sad for them because they don't grasp that there's a healthier, more hopeful way to achieve the things they're trying to achieve.

But in so,so many ways we're starting to find that the far-left and the far-right are actually coming together in the middle in recent years. They operate from the same impulses. Despite how the political pundits indoctrinate us otherwise, here's nothing wrong with being Conservative. Conservative and Liberal are just two sides of the same coin. What IS wrong is being closed-minded!

Closed-mindedness is both irritating and unbecoming, whether in a Conservative or a Liberal.

28. things are more like they are now than they've ever been.
america has been collapsing since it was founded. it will continue to do so in perpetuity without reaching collapse.

when you spot an open-minded conservative, be sure and point them out to me. i've always had the impression that the inability to face fears by seeing the exaggerations is what makes one a conservative in the 1st place.

31. You seem to agree with them a lot for someone who does not agree with them.
These guys look like self-serving tools to me, they can be dumb or evil, but you gotta pick at least one of those. I'm all for government reform, but anybody that thinks he is going to do it with his own private militia has his head deeply buried in his ass.

32. That's why I say they're acting out of fear, and not hope.
In rural areas of the country this type of mindset is fairly prevalent. They're NOT trying to 'reform' the government in any way, I doubt they feel that's even possible anymore. They're trying (again, IMO, misguidedly) to protect themselves from a government that they fear. And obviously if you don't have anything in your understanding to show you why people would fear the direction of modern leadership, then discussing this is a moot point.

But if you've run into some of the recently growing number of 'homesteader' or 'back-to-the-land' types...you'll see the same impulses in them: they're trying to cut the strings of modern bureaucracy, to get out from under 'the system' as far as possible
(for whatever that means). Freeing themselves of debt, becoming more self-reliant, strengthening community-based support so they can avoid State/Federal/Corporate support systems, that type of thing. I mean, ultimately most of the Green movement has this same impulse at it's core, if you strip away the corporate propaganda.

33. Well, OK, you have a point.
I am all for rugged independence, and I've known plenty of rural people, been one myself, and I share the ideal of self-sufficiency, insofar as that is still possible. Rednecks are people too, some of them fine people. However:

1.) These guys look like assholes to me. Look at their eyes. They are the newcomers in the area right? Who appointed them?

2.) Forming a militia with an eye towards vigilanteism and civil insurrection, which is what these goobers are talking about, is an entirely different thing from back-to-the-land rugged individualism and all that Jeffersonian idealism. If they were looking to work with, and obey, local government, I would be willing to consider a different view, but that is not what I hear.

I grew up in Nikiski, back before it was even named Nikiski (formerly known as the "North Road", which I always refer to myself as a "North Roader") these douche bags pop up every so often create a huge stink like a fart in an elevator. I see I will have to start fucking with some transplant knucklehead assholes. I can't wait to go home and start shit with these fuknuts.

Just left them a little message.

19. Take a close look at that picture above
Edited on Wed Sep-16-09 08:22 PM by SlingBlade
It reminds me of something my father often said ...
"Old men start war's that young men die for"

He served along with his older brother in WWII and knew that of which he spoke
His baby brother was later killed in Korea. They both loved him very much
I never got to know him, But he sounded like a swell guy.

Both my father and his surviving brother were good liberals until they day
they died and proud to say that not a single member of the family had become
a member of the military since. How they pulled that off during Vietnam I don't
know for sure, but I did hear some fanciful stories which were never confirmed.

Idiots like these McVeigh wannabe's above will always be with us
But thankfully, so will people like my father and my uncle

Both good liberals and true patriots till the day they died
Both peacefully in their sleep
