MORROW, Ga. -- The FBI is investigating the beating of an African-American woman by a white man at a Cracker Barrel restaurant as a possible hate crime.

Morrow police said they arrested Troy Dale West, of Poulan, Ga. after he attacked Tasha Hill after she asked him to "be careful" at a Cracker Barrel restaurant.

"The man slung open the door pretty hard and fast and I had to push my daughter out of the way. I turned to the man and I just said, 'Excuse me sir, you need to watch yourself you almost hit my daughter in the face.' And from there it just went downhill," said Hill.

At that point, West became enraged and began to beat the victim in front of her 7-year-old daughter, according to police. Hill said she told West she was an Army servicemember and she did not want any trouble.

West threw her to the ground and hit her in the head with his fists and feet, police said. During the exchange, witnesses said West could be heard screaming racial slurs at the victim.


Morrow police arrested Troy Dale West(47) of Poulan after reviewing a video surveillance tape and talking to customers. He was charged with battery, disorderly conduct and cruelty to children.

we were driving by a woman on the street who was being followed and screamed at by a man in a car. He pulled his car onto the sidewalk to block her.. I made the person I was with turn the car around (he did NOT want to "get invovled") She walked into a parking lot and the guy had blocked her up against a wall with his car (not hitting her, but blocking), and the person I was with was like... "he could have a gun, leave it alone." Well, as I was simultaneously calling 911, I asked her if we should call the police for her. She was like "oh, it's the father of my baby, don't call the police", and he's screaming at her to get in the car. I said it was too late, they're on the way, and he kept screaming, and she finally jumped in the car. They sped away at about 90 mph on the freeway, as we fed the police their information. Could he have had a gun? Sure! But I'd rather give it a try to make sure she wasn't shot to death... then worry about myself at that point. And what if he had shot her as we were driving by not wanting to get involved??

Americans have become cowards. We think that a phone call is going to save someone's life when another person is being beat or attacked. They could be dead in the few minutes it takes to get the police there, when some type of intervention could save their life. I will always err on the side of helping another person -- and I pray that someone would do the same for me if I was being attacked.

We were at a wedding when my husband intervened where a male had become abusive

with one of the female guests. It was in the lobby area. And the guy did pull

out a knife. My husband somehow recognized that he really didn't have his heart

it and managed to get it away from him.

However -- I don't see just anyone being able to intervene.

I've also intervened with a young teenaged male pushing around a young girl outside

the highschool. And I stayed a distance from him while protecting her and following

through by going into the high school to identify him.

Also making sure that the young girl understand the dangers of being with anyone who

is abusive at any time -- and encouraging her to speak with her family and teachers

about the incident.

I admire you -- but it's not something that everyone is ready, willing or ABLE to do.

But that again assumes something that is not clear from the newspaper article - that there WAS a crowd witnessing the initial attack. The witness in the paper is the grandma, and I'm sorry, grandma doesn't stand a chance against an enraged 250 lb asshole. She is not morally obligated to put her personal safety at risk, especially when the chances of actually succeeding (ie, stopping the attack by herself) are negligible.

We don't know when the guy was actually stopped - he was arrested, so it stands to reason he didn't just beat the woman indefinitely, nor was he allowed to get in his vehicle and leave. I don't know why everyone assumes that the guy wasn't stopped immediately because the racists in Georgia wanted to watch a beatdown - that assumption is completely unwarranted given the evidence. I'd also like to see how many of these DU Action Jacksons would be so badass and fearless if they found themselves in a similar situation in real life.

I'm aware of the bystander phenomenon, but I'm also aware that there are lots of decent people in the world too. No, they aren't morally obligated to put themselves in danger if they are old or disabled.

Yet it seems as though people are much less willing to get involved these days. It was a regular event twenty five-thirty years ago to see articles in the paper discussing how a person or group of people jumped in to save somebody or prevent this sort of thing from happening. Yet now, it seems more common to see articles that mention how people just watch.

As far as DU "action jacksons" I can't speak for them. I can only speak for myself, and yes, I have pulled big guys off the beat down they were putting out. I've also pulled people out of wrecked cars and bowled over the criminal who broke out the front window of the local store in order to snatch some cigs. Action jackson, no, just doing the right thing. And frankly, I wouldn't hesitate to do the right thing again either.

Something that we apparently need more of, people willing to do the right thing.

and btw in the school bus incident the local NAACP is stepping up.

The Rev. Johnny Scott, president of the NAACP's East St. Louis chapter, attended the meeting and said his group looks forward to working with the schools on race relations.
