Wexler hedges on opposition to bill without public option

One of three U.S. House Democrats in Florida who pledged to oppose any health care bill unless it created a government-run health plan to compete with private insurers appeared Tuesday to back away from the promise, saying he would be willing to support almost any plan President Obama spells out tonight.

"I have signed several letters expressing my view that the public option is a very, very important part of any reform," said U.S. Rep. Robert Wexler, D-Delray Beach. "But ultimately we will be voting 'yes' or 'no' and I will judge any health care bill on its own merits."

Wexler's shift comes six weeks after he joined a liberal group of House Democrats to oppose a bill that did not include a so-called "public option." The group included U.S. Reps. Alcee Hastings of Miramar and Corinne Brown of Jacksonville.

Today, Wexler will sign another letter informing Obama that it would be "unacceptable" if a bill does not include a public option.
