Hearse carrying Kennedy stops near Senate steps

By GLEN JOHNSON and DAVID ESPO, Associated Press Writers 3 mins ago
WASHINGTON The limousine bearing the remains of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy has stopped in Washington near the steps of the Senate where thousands of people are gathered to pay a final tribute.

At least 1,000 current or former congressional staffers gathered to honor the late senator. More than half of them are current and former Kennedy staffers. Nearby, another thousands more well-wishers stood on the Capitol lawn under shade trees or umbrellas.

Several senators were in the crowd, among them Democrat Robert Byrd of West Virginia, the longest serving senator in history. Kennedy's remains were brought to Washington after his funeral in Boston, and he will be buried Saturday night near his brothers John and Robert in Arlington National Cemetery.

5. Keith said he thought that the second singing of God Bless America was spontaneous from the crowd.
Although it was difficult to tell where the sound was coming from.

3. What really got me....
was the Capitol policemen snapping to attention, one by one, as the hearse slowly rolled by.

4. This has got to be the most touching funeral I've ever seen.
I detest funerals, but this is one that is sad, yet joyful. This is the way every one of us should go out.

6. That was very moving-all day was. I imagine the Kennedys are
just exhausted. For them, I'm glad this is almost over.

But the whole day has been beautiful and memorable to me, and I thank them for sharing it with us.

8. Getting up in front of an audience shortly after a close relative has died
is no easy thing to do, even if you knew the death was coming. Its hard to hold it together. The family showed courage, even the youngest ones.

9. Sadly, this family has endured more tragedy, and had more practice in courage
than any family should have to endure.
