Robert Novak, Chicago Sun-Times Columnist, "Prince of Darkness" died Tuesday
Source: Chicago Sun-Times

WASHINGTON--Chicago Sun-Times columnist Robert Novak, one of the nation's most influential journalists, who relished his "Prince of Darkness" public persona, died at home here early Tuesday morning after a battle with brain cancer.

"He was someone who loved being a journalist, love journalism and loved his country and loved his family, Novak's wife, Geraldine, told the Sun-Times on Tuesday.

Novak's remarkable and long-running career made him a powerful presence in newspaper columns, newsletters, books and on television.

On May 15, 1963, Novak teamed up with the late Rowland Evans Jr. to create the "Inside Report" political column, which became the must-read syndicated column. Evans tapped Novak, then a 31-year old correspondent for the Wall Street Journal, to help with the workload of a six-day-a-week column.

As cancers go, that is. It's a very aggressive cancer. I knew he would be a goner quick on the day he retired, when he cited that his doctor telling him how dire his condition was.

72. Again, I didn't agree with him.
Respect in my terminology encompasses integrity. I don't believe he was a shill for any officeholder or for the republican party. When he erred, I have concluded it was his personal decision and he held certain journalistic principles. Of course, I disagree with his treatment of Valerie Plame but it was a misguided call IMO.

When he hit that biker, and did not even know a collision had taken place, I thought something was very wrong.
Hopefully he passed without pain and suffering.

He always had insights and scoops, and while he was definitely on the other side of the street politically, he was an interesting read. Compared to morans like Oh, Really? Sean, and Rush, he was pleasant and polite.

16. I had always liked Novak, in spite of his views. He knew he was being a jerk
and loved playing that role in an almost mischievous way. So it was almost like he was just saying stuff just to get a rise out of everyone. He believed what he was saying, but he would go overboard just to get a rise out of everyone. You knew this because he smiled entirely too much when he was doing it, loving every minute of it. It really was something like this:  Nevertheless, I agreed with little, if any, of what he did and said but always enjoyed watching him argue and enjoyed yelling back at the TV.

Then he outed Valerie Plame and I never saw him in the same light because that was evil and wrong and he had to have known it at the time. Maybe he already had brain cancer at the time and it impaired his judgment. I don't know.

Still, may God rest his soul.

Besides Novak quit his job a few years ago, there is no sense in beating a dead horse.

Yet Beck, Limpnuts and the other screwballs will probably not quit until they croak. So I will have good reason to sing "ding-dong the witch is dead" once those assholes are six feet under.

42. "My response now is this: The hell with you. They didn't ruin me."
Robert Novak, Long-Time Conservative Columnist, Dies at 78

August 18, 2009

.....

In his memoir, Novak said he would not have used Plame's name if the CIA director or the agency's spokesman told him it would have endangered national security or Plame's life. A CIA spokesman had twice warned Novak not to print Plame's name but could not reveal why to Novak because her status was classified.

Novak told Washingtonian magazine in November that he would not hesitate to run the column again. "I'd go full speed ahead because of the hateful and beastly way in which my left-wing critics in the press and Congress tried to make a political affair out of it and tried to ruin me," he said.

"My response now is this: The hell with you. They didn't ruin me. I have my faith, my family and a good life. A lot of people love me -- or like me. So they failed. I would do the same thing over again because I don't think I hurt Valerie Plame whatsoever."

If he hadn't outed Valerie Plame, I don't know if I would have been as compelled to research and uncover just how corrupt, Machiavellian, and just plain evil the neo-cons are.

So thanks for showing me the face of evil, Bob. I won't shoot the messenger. Your eternal fate is out of my hands.

88. Curious timing of his death with pending release of Sibel's testimony re Brewster Jennings...
Makes you wonder if when her testimony tapes get released if there will be those who wanted to have talked to Novak why he thought Valerie Plame was "fair game", and if he might have had more intimate knowledge of Marc Grossman's involvement in the Brewster Jennings outing than he had told us.

The conspiracy theorist in me wants to look at his cause of death more closely! :)

132. Me too. I believe both Grossman and Armitage were involved in both outings.
I sincerely doubt that Armitage was simply passing along a hot piece of gossip to Novak in July of 2003. And Novak clearly had an understanding of exactly what Brewster Jennings was. As I recall, Plame wrote in her book Fair Game that Novak publicly outed Brewster Jennings in a later column. I'll bet Armitage was probably his source on that column too.

Yeah, the conspiracy theorist in me wonders when it was Novak contracted cancer. I wonder about Jack Ruby's cancer too, but that's another story. ;)

He may be a vile conservative that committed treason against his own country by outing a CIA agent, but compared to the wackjobs we got controlling our discourse today he's downright sane.

I guess this time I'll raise my glass to a fallen enemy.

63. Novak was a complex man
With many eccentricities in his views. I think his treatment of Valerie Plame was disgraceful and obviously I strongly disagreed with his conservative views. Having said that, I remember reading several of his columns especially in the lead up to the 2000 presidential election and quite enjoying them. Also he seemed to have the ability to think beyond the mainstream right wing talking points on some of the key issues and display a rationality, a talent for critical thinking and an intelligence that few right wing commentators and MSM talking heads these days seem to have.

RIP Robert Novak. My sincerest thoughts, prayers, sympathies and condolences go out to Mr. Novak's friends and family for the days and months ahead

149. He did some despicable things undoubtedly
And made some decisions that have had some very negative consequences for his country. And those deserve to be remembered and he deserves to be called out for them.

All I am saying is that, as bad and reprehensible as he may have been, he still had more depth and dimension than most right wing commentators do today. Perhaps that's more of an indictment of the quality of right wing commentators today than it is an acclaimation of Novak

Rove was once fired by Bush Sr. - 1992 campaign. Supposedly for leaking a story to Robert Novak.

I imagine Rove was fired for other, more sinister, reasons. This is also when his political Sextortion schemes began when DC madam Palfrey joined CIA Foggo while he and Rove, Cheney all lived in Texas with both Bush's running for office. I can easily imagine Novak was a top media 'hit man' for these political assaination against whole families - including MY OWN! http://fbicorruption.250free.com

<<<In 1992, Rove was fired from then-President George H.W. Bush's re-election campaign for leaking a negative story to the press concerning Bush fundraiser Robert Mosbacher. Not only was Rove fired for leaking a story to the press, the "press" just so happened to be reporter Robert Novak.....>>>

still, he did champion some pretty mean and stupid things in his time.

that said, i will sort of miss him on the talk shows, he was, if nothing else, a character. i would have enjoyed talking to him about anything... except politics maybe.

on edit:

at least he stayed married to the same lady for almost 50 years... i dare the right wingers that bleat the loudest about "family values" try and pull that off

141. Expect a Fall of interesting disclosures.
Bob Novak's personal assistant for the past couple of decades is Patrick Buchanan's sister (the quiet one, not the obnoxious one). Buchanan, having his own unique axe to grind and a decent respect for history, will almost certainly get wind of the more interesting stuff and start using it.

Recall that all through the Valerie Plame Wilson affair, it was Buchanan who knew for sure that the primary culprit was Scooter Libby, and made little secret about the fact that he knew it. The reason is that Pat's sister took the call.

151. Robert Novak, Columnist, Dies at 78
Edited on Tue Aug-18-09 05:07 PM by azurnoir
Source: NYT

Robert D. Novak, the pugnacious political columnist and cable television fixture whose scoops reached across five decades and whose nickname, “the prince of darkness,” was invoked with renewed fervor in 2003 when, acting on a tip, he revealed the name of a C.I.A. officer, setting the stage for a criminal investigation, died Tuesday morning at his home in northwest Washington. He was 78.

The cause was a malignant brain tumor, according to his wife, Geraldine. It was the latest of a number of cancers and maladies, including spinal meningitis and broken bones, that Mr. Novak had suffered in recent years.

I've seen several comments on other blogs where people were critical of those who expressed their lack of sorrow over Novak's death. That's actually why I want Bush, Cheney, Yoo, Addington, Rumsfield, Rice, Gonzales & all their cohorts to live LOOOONNNG LOOOONNNG lives. I don't want those feelings of humanity that always kick in when one of our fellow humans dies, to soften anyone's memory of the horrors perpetrated by that lot.

181. Jack Nicholson: 'I warned him.'
NEW YORK — Jack Nicholson said Tuesday that he "warned" Robert Novak.

The 70-year-old Oscar winner was dining at the Wolseley restaurant in London when a photographer told him about Novak's death.

After saying, "That's awful," Jack added “I warned him," and refused to elaborate.

it out. It will be our nation's mission - eradicate Alzheimers (or cancer) within my term."

Novak died of the same cancer Ted Kennedy is fighting. I understand your anger over the Plame incident. But let us expect that if or when Sen. Kennedy dies, the dancing opposition will bring up Mary Jo Kopechne and the Chappaquiddick incident. Be careful of the boomerang effect.

189. Robert Novak DEAD
Source: SF Gate

Robert Novak, the longtime syndicated columnist and television commentator who was at the center of a furor late in his career as the first journalist to disclose the identity of CIA operative Valerie Wilson, died Tuesday. He was 78.

...

They began with CNN when the network launched in 1980, hosting "Evans and Novak." Derided by liberal critics as "Errors and No Facts," Evans and Mr. Novak were actually more reporters than commentators and had their share of scoops over the years.

After Evans retired in 1993, Mr. Novak continued the column and was a regular on several CNN shows. He kept the column going online even after he officially retired last summer, shortly after his diagnosis. Evans died in 2001.

Besides his wife, Mr. Novak is survived by their son, Alexander; daughter, Zelda Caldwell; and eight grandchildren.

I was over in Italy and it didn't make the news at all over there. And despite everything the man has done and said, the hurt he has caused, I hope that God's compassion is infinite and that he will forgive Robert Novak.
