ALWASHINGTON -- Former White House political adviser Karl Rove told congressional investigators last month that he did not contact anyone at the U.S. Department of Justice about the criminal probe of former Democratic Gov. Don Siegelman of Alabama, according to a transcript released Tuesday by the House Judiciary Committee.
Rove also said he didn't remember pursuing the matter with Gov. Bob Riley, a Republican; his son, Rob; or Bill Canary, a former GOP operative who is the husband of Leura Garrett Canary, the U.S. attorney in Montgomery whose office was responsible for handling Siegelman's case.
Rove, who at one point served as White House deputy chief of staff, did acknowledge an interest in Riley's political fortunes prior to the governor's 2006 re-election bid but said he had "a lot more significant things to worry about than the Don Siegelman case."
Although Rove did not testify under oath, it is a crime to lie to Congress. He was asked about his contacts with the Justice Department from the time following Siegelman's election in 1998 until late 2005, when the former governor was indicted on federal corruption charges.

The former governor said he had not yet read the Rove transcript, but is "looking forward" to the committee's questioning of Canary and Rob Riley over allegations made two years ago by Rainsville lawyer Dana Jill Simpson.
