Karl Rove denies pushing Don Siegelman investigation; Siegelman awaits future interviews
Source: AL

WASHINGTON -- Former White House political adviser Karl Rove told congressional investigators last month that he did not contact anyone at the U.S. Department of Justice about the criminal probe of former Democratic Gov. Don Siegelman of Alabama, according to a transcript released Tuesday by the House Judiciary Committee.

Rove also said he didn't remember pursuing the matter with Gov. Bob Riley, a Republican; his son, Rob; or Bill Canary, a former GOP operative who is the husband of Leura Garrett Canary, the U.S. attorney in Montgomery whose office was responsible for handling Siegelman's case.

Rove, who at one point served as White House deputy chief of staff, did acknowledge an interest in Riley's political fortunes prior to the governor's 2006 re-election bid but said he had "a lot more significant things to worry about than the Don Siegelman case."

Although Rove did not testify under oath, it is a crime to lie to Congress. He was asked about his contacts with the Justice Department from the time following Siegelman's election in 1998 until late 2005, when the former governor was indicted on federal corruption charges.

...

The former governor said he had not yet read the Rove transcript, but is "looking forward" to the committee's questioning of Canary and Rob Riley over allegations made two years ago by Rainsville lawyer Dana Jill Simpson.

1. It's a crime to lie to Congress, but
who's going to punish Rove for lying to Congress? "I don't recall, I don't recall..."

4. So you're in the pessimist camp. Good for you.
Meanwhile the methodical dismantling of BushCo continues slowly and CAREFULLY. We're getting closer, not further from prosecutions every day, and that is encouraging.

The BushCo crimes are extremely complex, and jumping the gun to take down Karl for instance could be a really big mistake. It really all depends on who the DOJ is really after, and I'm reasonably certain that it doesn't end at Rove.

6. BushCo's* crimes aren't at all complex. It just takes time to build a strong case.
Once Congress, the DOJ and FBI have got "Teh Peoples" screaming for blood, they'll be ready to go to trial.

What gets me is the ignorance of this bunch of crooks. They have no clue how easy it is to track communications and recover information. Then again, they thought they'd have Gidget and Gramps in the WH continuing the cover-up and none of this ever would have come out.

And we haven't even begun to hear from any number of whistleblowers yet.

5. He's lying as usual. Rove is the quintessential enemy of US democracy.
A real American rat.
