President Barack Obama authorizes extended Secret Service guard for former VP Dick Cheney

Former Vice President Dick Cheney will have another six months of Secret Service protection. Walsh/AP

WASHINGTON - Former Vice President Dick Cheney's Secret Service protection has been extended for at least another six months, beginning Tuesday.

Normally, ex-veeps only get six months of protection at taxpayer expense. But Cheney asked for an extension, and President Obama - whom Cheney has excoriated in several interviews since leaving office - recently signed off.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano signed the order extending Cheney's security detail, her spokeswoman Sara Kuban confirmed Monday.

If the Obama administration hadn't gone along with Cheney's request, he would have been forced to hire his own security agents - or go without.

5. If he is afraid, he has enough $$ for security
One might hope the extended Secret Service protection is actually a two way street and he being guarded to protect everyone else ;)

If I were Obama and knew cheney had his moles all over government still, I would want some good eyes on cheney.

14. Hmmm, why would President Obama extend Darth Cheney*'s security?
A. Because he's the most hated man in the world?
B. Because he knows where the bodies are buried?
C. Because the world has figured out that ol' G.W. Bush* can't fart and chew gum at the same time, much less fuck the country and the planet to this extent without some evil bastard calling the shots?
D. Because that was part of the deal he cut with Poppy?
E. Because Darth has threatened to tell just who his private assassination squad actually assassinated?

... really thought about this?

Do you *really* think that one of the most powerful men of
the last few decades is going to be even slightly impeded
by the presence of the *same* Secret Service that were around
him 24x7 during his reign and throughout all of his crimes
against humanity (never mind simple treason) of the last
nine years?

Really?

The ONLY country he *might* be able to refuge in would be Israel. Plus, his -day-to-day medical needs are very intensive. Why, his daily kitten-for-breakfast habit alone is enough to make him a marked man.

Dick Cheney Gets the Gift of More Protection
Posted: 07/22/09

Former Vice President Dick Cheney received word yesterday from the Obama administration that his Secret Service protection will be extended indefinitely. Via CNN:

The extension was not based on a specific threat against the former vice president, CNN has also learned. Rather, officials believed the move was justified given the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, political debate about the Bush administration's strategies and Cheney's active public schedule, according to a government official with knowledge of the matter.

The decision to expand the time-frame beyond the customary six-month window that follows a vice president's tenure in office was made by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

65. Going by the price of Cheney's 6-month detail, this is going to cost taxpayers $8 MILLION a year
Personally, I'm happy to see the equivalent of 160x my annual salary going to such a worthy cause. :eyes:

There's a thought...why not make protection of Cheney a public works project? I'm sure there are plenty of unemployed Americans who would be happy to earn a living again.
