Over 1M apply for Jackson memorial tickets
Source: MSNBC

LOS ANGELES - More than a million fans from around the world applied for 17,500 free tickets to Michael Jackson's public memorial service next week, organizers said on Friday as a massive security operation got underway.

The life and music of the self-proclaimed "king of pop," who died of sudden cardiac arrest last Thursday, will be celebrated on Tuesday at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles.

Officials on Friday unveiled an online lottery that will allow fans to attend either the televised service at the arena or watch the proceedings on a big screen at the nearby Nokia Theater.

But within minutes, the staplescenter.com server crashed. More than 1,223,978 applications had been received by 9:00 p.m. EST on Friday.

1. My unfortunate neighbor has to cover that tomorrow
he's a journalist with a British news service. He was lucky and got a hotel within walking distance of the Staples center, but I think he's worried that it's going to be hard to get much of anything worthwhile on tape with the mad crush of other reporters there, and all the fans. He should have some interesting stories to tell when he gets back!

...to all television networks. MJ's family and the organizers are particularly committed that this be a free memorial service, in respect to MJ's memory and to his fans.

6. Here's the thing
Edited on Sat Jul-04-09 03:22 PM by no_hypocrisy
L.A. is not prepared at all for the masses of people who will try to crash the memorial. They're going to rush, push, and get in no matter what. I'm predicting stampedes with fatalies. Shootings, stabbings, fights, etc. I wish this weren't so Cassandra, but I think the disaster is wholly predictable.

7. The Woodstock Principle
STAGE 1). Paid Concert

STAGE 2). People showed up whether they had tickets or not

STAGE 3). Arlo Guthrie, speaking from the stage: "The New York State Thruway is CLOSED, man!"

STAGE 4). People without tickets tear down fences, etc.

STAGE 5). Promoters, from the stage: "From this point on it's a free concert"

Tuesday will be a good day to stay the hell away from L.A.

17. Thanks for your positive spirit
I live in LA and I signed up with the millions of others to go.

If you don't have a ticket, you can't get in -- period.
You must be a citizen of the USA to get in and you must have ID to get in.

I'm staying positive and IF I get a 17,000 chance in a million-- "I'll Be There."

23. US citizenship not required. And it's an 8500 in a million chance...
The organizers opened the ticket registration up to MJ's international fans as of this morning. And the odds are only 8,500 in a million chance, as each person drawn will get two tickets. So only 8,500 names will be drawn...

12. Thanks for being so positive
about the process.

See my other post on this thread.

Los Angeles has so many huge events and this one will not allow you anywhere near it unless you have the tickets, your ID and the arm bands.

We just had the Lakers Victory Party and everything went smoothly.

I've had some of the most treasured moments of my life because of my Positve spirit.

Including ...seeing the Jackson Five in Concert in Orange County many years ago.

Seeing Obama from 5 rows back at USC two years ago.

I could go on and on and whenever I want to do something, if I have the energy and power to do it -- I'll try.

You can't win the lottery unless you have a ticket. :bounce:

8. I registered before the crash- must live in USA
They asked for name, address, email address, age and birthday.
They clearly said you had to live in the US.

Then they sent a Notice that I would be included in the selection process.

Later on TV they said that the Tickets would have to be picked up at I think a Ticket Master Location and that everyone of those selected would be given two free tickets to either the Staple Center or to the Nikon (sp) Center next to Staple Center to watch it there on the big screen TV.
They would also give everyone an arm identification badge.

I'll take either one, I live in LA and I would love to go.

IF ( big if) I win,I would find a hotel to stay in within walking distance of the Staple Center. All the streets will be blocked off around there.

I love excitement and one think for sure ~ in order to win the lottery, you need a ticket.

Hope I get in!
