Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla) -- who has been ridiculed for his denial of the global warming -- is calling Al Franken a "clown" -- but not in a disrespectful way.

In a far-ranging interview with the Tulsa World, Inhofe said: “I didn’t mean to be disrespectful. I don’t know the guy, but … for a living he is a clown... That’s what he does for a living.’’

Inhofe was born in Des Moines, Iowa and moved with his family to Tulsa, Oklahoma, when he was a child. He was a member of the Class of 1953 at Tulsa Central High School,<3> and served in the United States Army from 1957 to 1958.<4><5>

In 1959, Inhofe married Kay Kirkpatrick, with whom he has four children.

Inhofe received a B.A. degree from the University of Tulsa in 1973, at the age of 38.

In his business career, Inhofe was a real estate developer and became president of the Quaker Life Insurance Company. That company went into receivership while he managed it; it was liquidated in 1986.<6>

In a representative democracy, who the citizens choose to protect their interests is an issue between them and the ballot box. If they choose a clown or an actor or a failed hawker of life insurance (Mr Inhofe's specialty, in a less than successful pre-political career*), the ultimate determination of whether that individual best serves the public's interest will -- again -- be made by the citizens at the ballot box.

Why is this such a difficult concept for some to grasp?

He was very good at being a clown. Why are people taking it as an insult? Wear the clown label with pride!

Who cares what Inhofe thinks? The world needs clowns. At least one member of the Senate ADMITS to being a clown.

I loved the things he did on SNL, and the things he wrote for them. They wouldn't have been half as funny if they hadn't been intelligent and bitingly satirical.

Franken is still funny. But he is a Harvard graduate, a writer and a Senator as well as a clown. Minnesota is lucky to be represented by someone so versatile.
