Snapple Outsourcing Deal May Aid American Workers
Source: NYT

Published: June 30, 2009

NEW DELHI — Even Snapple, an American iced tea maker with a homespun image, is outsourcing work to an Indian company. But in a twist, the deal may increase jobs in the United States.

The Dr. Pepper Snapple Group said Tuesday that it had signed a five-year contract with HCL Technologies, a major information technology and outsourcing company in Noida, India. HCL will manage Snapple’s computer networks — but may be hiring in the United States to do it.

HCL said that Dr. Pepper Snapple would be its “anchor service desk customer” in an operation in Raleigh, N.C., that would eventually employ 500. With the new deal, HCL is continuing to “bring on new staff at our new facility in North Carolina,” Shami Khorana, president of HCL America, said in a statement.

Indian Informational technology and outsourcing companies have been increasing their use of so-called “onshoring,” or putting jobs in a client’s home market, as political pressures build to grow jobs in countries hard hit by the slowdown.

1. Bullshit. It won't help anyone but HCL and their corporate bottom line.
I doubt any new positions will be created let alone enough to replace the outsourced ones.

8. Interesting twist on capitalism (that the capitalists hate)
Now, workers are staying local, and the ownership is becoming interchangeable. Honestly, if true, to the common worker, what difference does it make if the shareholders are Americans or Indians? Either way, fuck em.

13. there's your answer! they'll fly in more than half of the new hires on L1 visas!
I see this all over my county - the McDonalds in the county (about 5) are more than half Indian workers who understand only moderate amounts of English, and about a 1/4 are Eastern block European types that are even more confused. The owner is obviously bringing these young folks in....

so aggravating.

14. job creation for who? for the H1B visa applicants who get to come
to live here? I don't begrudge folks a job anywhere in the world, but with unemployment so high I think that job creation that gives people who already live here jobs is real job creation
