Sec. Clinton on Honduras Coup
Source: State Department

The action taken against Honduran President Mel Zelaya violates the precepts of the Inter-American Democratic Charter, and thus should be condemned by all. We call on all parties in Honduras to respect the constitutional order and the rule of law, to reaffirm their democratic vocation, and to commit themselves to resolve political disputes peacefully and through dialogue. Honduras must embrace the very principles of democracy we reaffirmed at the OAS meeting it hosted less than one month ago.

14. Totally Different Dynamics
For one, the whole religious thing.

Two - In Iran, openly supporting the democrats falls into the old paradigm of American meddling in that the current regime overthrew a US puppet. So even if the democratic resistance isn't American inspired, supporting it hurts it.

In Latin America, we are actually taking the side to people we opposed so long.

16. We've always had a lot of influence (control) in Honduras. It's our staging ground for Central
America and the Caribbean. We have an enormous air base there.

Honduras is a beautiful country, but the United Fruit Company really had a long and negative influence on it.

Tell them the have a place in S. Beach. Look, our relationship with those caudillo types is sort of mafiaso anyway. Beach-front retirement in Florida or we cut off all military aid, freeze your bank acounts, etc. and you have to leave anyway, if you can get out in time. The easy way or the hard way.

But his decision to put her at State seems better and better every day. Not that it was ever in doubt and I don't mean just this episode, I think she has been a perfect top-diplomat from the time she took office. Hillary rocks.
