Sanford Compares Plight To King David
Source: CBS News/AP

S.C. Governor Gets Back To Work, Tells His Cabinet He's Sorry For Keeping Them In The Dark Over Affair

(AP) South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford is telling his state agency chiefs that he's sorry for keeping them in the dark when he went to see Argentina to see his mistress.

The Republican on Friday held his typical public meeting with the agency chiefs, but started with apologies and likening his confession and future to the biblical plight of King David.

Meanwhile, the man who would replace South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford if he resigned over his affair with a woman in Argentina said Friday he wasn't calling for the governor's resignation, and would try to help him through the next year and a half.

Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, a fellow Republican, told The Associated Press that he spoke to Sanford on Thursday and "could tell he had done a lot of soul searching." The two, who have not been allies and don't run on the same ticket, didn't discuss the possibility of the governor stepping down.

1. King David? Does he mean the part with Bathsheba bathing and King
Edited on Fri Jun-26-09 02:53 PM by no_hypocrisy
David "falling in love" with her and the fall-out from that?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bathsheba

The story of David's seduction of Bathsheba, told in 2 Samuel 11, is omitted in Chronicles. The story is told that David, while walking on the roof of his house, saw Bathsheba, who was then the wife of Uriah, taking a bath. He immediately desired her and later made her pregnant.

In an effort to conceal his sin, David summoned Uriah from the army (with whom he was on campaign) in the hope that Uriah would reconsummate his marriage and think the child his. Uriah was unwilling to violate the ancient kingdom rule applying to warriors in active service.<1> Rather than go home to his own bed, he preferred to remain with the palace troops.

After repeated efforts to convince Uriah to fertilize Bathsheba, the king gave the order to his general, Joab, that Uriah should be abandoned during a heated battle and left to the hands of the enemy. Ironically, David had Uriah himself carry the message that ordered his death. After Uriah was dead, David made the now widowed Bathsheba his wife.

Good biblical allusion Mike. Keep trying.

68. I found this,
RITUAL IN THE OLD TESTAMENT APOCRYPHA
DRAFT FOR DISCUSSION

James R. Davila
St. Mary's College
University of St. Andrews

Weddings are mentioned in Baruch, 1 Maccabees, Ben Sira, and Tobit. Tobit actually describes a wedding ceremony in some detail: the father gives the bride to the groom and blesses them, the men sign a written contract, there is a meal, then the family escort the groom to the bride's bridal chamber. Tobit also mentions a fourteen-day wedding feast and a subsequent seven-day celebration by family in another city. We are told in 1 Maccabees that royal weddings were celebrated with great pomp and that a Nabatean wedding included a procession and music.

It really takes a set to compare yourself to a Biblical character after getting caught with your pants down.

He must think to sin is human, to get caught is divine...

20. the outcome
My office is in downtown Columbia, and without giving away too much my company is pretty close to the politics of state government. The people in my office are about 60-40 that he will resign. What complicates the matter is, as referenced above, the Lt Gov, who is running in 2010, would replace him, gaining a huge advantage. The person who should take him down if, as everyone expects, some public money was spent on his adventures, is the Attorney General, who is also running.
The Democrats look like they have a very attractive candidate this time; his uncle was a long time Speaker of the House before the GOP took over. The best scenario would probably be to have Sanford hanging around at election time, but the Lt Gov has exhibited some very reckless behavior and barely won re-election. One event was he was clocked at over 100 miles an hour, and when he stopped he acted so aggressively the cop pulled his gun on him before realizing who he was.

52. Yea, but that was before Andre had his "come to Jesus"
meeting when he crash his plane! Since then, he's kinda been "flying" under the radar, so to speak, but I still don't want him running the state.

We sure do know how to pick them, don't we? Thurmond, Hollings, Ravenel, Sanford, Graham, and DeMint. The hall of shame is endless. Even Bernake is from SC, although we didn't elect him.

Nice to know we have Dems in Columbia. "Are-Grits-Groceries" is holding down the PeeDee and I'm doing "missionary work" here in the Low Country. Now, with you in Columbia, maybe we can make some blue inroads in this sea of red. Gawd knows we can't do any worse than what we have.

together?

Is he trying to take the quick confession of a "mistress" to keep anyone from learning that it was actually a "mister"? Or maybe he just got all caught up in "protecting traditional marriage" - back when David could have hundreds of wives - just think how many the good King would have been able to have with today's modern day air travel network!~

48. Allow me to translate. I speak Neo Theo. Next to Jesus, David is the Biblical
figure most favored by God. (Jews might say Abraham was, but Christians would say David, at least among OT figures.) Jesus is supposedly a direct descendant of David. (See Luke 2.)

What Sanford is saying is that even the ruler most favored by God cheated (and worse) and it did not mess up either his worldly career or his relationship with God. So, religously speaking, there's no earthly or heavenly reason for me to resign.

It's an entertaining part of his love notes.
He uses Bible quotes on his mistress and in his apology for going to Argentina to have sex with her.

He is deranged.

He probably won't be quoting Leviticus 20:10 anytime soon:

"And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall be put to death."
