Big names expected to take on big coal
Source: http://www.wvpubcast.org/newsarticle.aspx?id=10131

June 22, 2009 · Actress Daryl Hannah, former Congressman Ken Hechler, and NASA climatologist James Hansen are traveling to Raleigh County.
Hundreds of people are expected at Marsh Fork Elementary in Raleigh County on Tuesday for what’s supposed to be a non-violent demonstration.

To prepare, environmentalists are hosting seminars in peaceful tactics at the Coal River Mountain Watch facility on Monday. A member says it’s an effort to keep tensions low during the demonstration.

The elementary has been in the middle of a debate between environmentalists and Massey Energy for more than four years. The school sits next to a mountaintop removal site and about 400 yards away from an impoundment holding back almost three billion gallons of coal slurry.

<...>

Demonstrators are planning to walk from the school to nearby Massey Energy offices. They say they’ll deliver a list of demands to the company and risk arrest by trespassing on company property.

2. I don't know, but...
go to Google Maps or Google Earth and just scan around West Virginia and surrounding areas. It's not hard to see these operations from space!

3. Wow. Ken Hechler is still around?
I used to live next door to him when I was little. I mean literally a wall away in an apartment complex. Granted, I was young, but he seemed a little old even then.

Really nice guy though.

5. It'll be lights out for the northeast corridor if Appalachia doesn't provide an alternate source of
energy.
Those coal fired east coast power plants only have a few days supply of coal kept in inventory on site.
So whats wrong with stimulus $ providing jobs in alternate energy being supplied from the same areas?
