APWASHINGTON—U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein has canceled a fundraiser in her honor after an invitation to potential guests came across to some as more audacious than amusing.
The fundraiser, scheduled for Wednesday, included a play on words about the California Democrat's committee assignments.
It said the luncheon included a menu of "the Select Committee on Intelligence for the first course followed by your choice of Appropriations, Judiciary or Rules committees." Feinstein is chairman of the Intelligence Committee and serves on the other committees cited.

"It was obvious that this would be subject to misinterpretation by some, and it was canceled to avoid any misinterpretation," he said.

It's common for political fundraisers to list lawmakers' committee assignments, but "others don't say it in so quite a blatant way," said Nancy Watzman, who monitors fundraising efforts at the Sunlight Foundation, which promotes transparency.
"She was just highlighting what everyone knows. If you have business before a committee, there's an opportunity to meet-and-greet this politician in a personal way," Watzman said.
