WASHINGTON – CIA Director Leon Panetta says former Vice President Dick Cheney's criticism of the Obama administration's approach to terrorism almost suggests "he's wishing that this country would be attacked again, in order to make his point."

Panetta told The New Yorker for an article in its June 22 issue that Cheney "smells some blood in the water" on the issue of national security.

Cheney has said in several interviews that he thinks Obama is making the U.S. less safe. He has been critical of Obama for ordering the closure of the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, halting enhanced interrogations of suspected terrorists and reversing other Bush administration initiatives he says helped to prevent attacks on the U.S.

Look, I don't like to do this very often but criminology and criminal psychology are hobbies of mine. I'm not professionally qualified, just a very well read amateur but in this case, I don't need to be qualified because Cheney's entire manner and history scream "PSYCHOPATH" at deafening volume. I'm using that word in it's full technical sense. The psychopath is not always violent (although I really wouldn't be surprised to discover Cheney had a hobby of dismembering hitchhikers) but they completely lack conscience, empathy or inhibitions. Everything in the psychopath's life, every decision they make, is based on how much it would benefit them. That is the only factor that comes into play. You know that little voice in your head that tells you to play by society's rules (mostly)? That you shouldn't smack the guy taking an age at the ATM or the counter idiot at Burger King who can't comprehend "hold the pickles"? Psychopaths don't have that. Their only consideration is how much it would benefit them and what the likely consequences would be.

When 9/11 happened, Cheney didn't care about the 3000-or-so dead. His only consideration was how it could be used to his advantage. Two wars, draconian national security laws and however many dead later, that is still the only thing he cares about. The theory of deliberately botching the wars follows that. If the wars were quickly won (which was possible), what does Cheney get out of it? Not much. Plus they would start pumping oil in Iraq, bringing the price down. However, if both areas are plunged into chaos, no oil can be moved, pushing the price up and adding to Cheney's fortune. OK, a lot of people will die but what does he care? It's not him or his loved ones (yes, psychopath's can feel love although not in the same way that we do) on the firing line so they don't matter to him in the slightest.
